Default Alaska Aces new Flames ECHL affiliate

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=680593

Quote:
“We have a serious commitment to rebuilding and getting our prospects ready to contribute as quickly as possible in Calgary,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We continue to demonstrate the importance we have placed on development. In support of these objectives, we are excited to be able to add such a quality organization as the Alaska Aces to our development process.”

"We always said we didn’t just want an affiliation. We wanted the right affiliation," said Terry Parks, Managing Member of the Aces’ ownership group. "The Flames are an organization on the rise. They have a great group of talented, young players, and we are certain that this relationship will pay dividends for both sides."

"There are so many things to be excited about by partnering with Calgary and Abbotsford," Aces’ Head Coach Rob Murray said. "We’re going to be able to give our guys a first-hand look at AHL training camps with a top-notch organization like the Heat. They’re going to be able to take that experience and grow from it all year long. Additionally, we know that we’re going to get some of the best young talent around to develop throughout the season."

Interesting. Not only does Abby have the worst travel in the AHL by far, the Aces have the worst travel in the ECHL.

Preparing them for Calgary travel in the NHL. Not the worst, but not a cake walk either.

Has Scott Gomez being signed yet? If not, maybe we could get him to play up there.

It will also be interesting to see if the Flames actually assign any of their European/goalie guys to Alaska.

As getbak pointed out in the other thread, the Aces home rink is international standard and having a guy like Ortio down there for example would be counter-productive in trying to get him acclimatized to the NA game.

Knowing the rink is international standard suddenly lessens any excitement I had about this.

The Aces have always had one of the strongest fan bases in the ECHL so I see this as a good move. My dad works in Anchorage, maybe I can get him to go to a couple of games to scout the prospects (although I doubt he'd approach it with the same fanaticism we CPers would).

I am surprised the ECHL is okay with this. Seems like a distinct home ice advantage. Although I would imagine it would take a bit of adjusting on the players to play an away game after a long home stint so this benefit is probably cancelled out.

What did I just watch? That was a trip!

Very unrealistic that three missiles from a fighter jet can single-handedly blow up the world like it was a red giant ready to explode.

I give that intro video a A- on creativity and the organization an A+ on allowing a person with a PCP addiction to work there.

Anchorage has a fairly moderate climate for the sub-arctic. Average hi/lo temp in January is 23F/11F.
