Flames Stepping on Toes??

Steve Macfarlane article in the Sun this morning...

http://calsun.canoe.ca/Sports/Hockey...71881-sun.html

Not sure what to read into this but it is something that was not really brought up in this forum after the closed door meeting.

Apparently Sutter doesn't think Keenan is doing enough to get his point across. Or maybe this is just speculation as we have seen this storyline before and Darryl likes to come downstairs once and awhile.

Thoughts?

I think Daryl is simply taking control of HIS team. once in a while this type of thing is needed. The players listen to the coaches all year. When your GM steps in its a real kick in the pants and may be whats needed to get the attention back and keep the guys on track.
will be interesting to see how they respond tonight... a big statement game against a team that has had their way with us this year

There is a unwritten rule that the GM gets to speak to the team no more than twice in a season. It is no big deal at all.

What I like from the Article:

Quote:
The players get the message. In fact, they got the same one from captain Jarome Iginla minutes before Sutter stormed in.
"The weird thing is Jarome had a meeting just prior to that and pretty much said the same thing," said Craig Conroy.

Oh Captain, my Captain!

Those close to Mike Keenan are likely the only ones who know exactly how the Calgary Flames head coach felt when general manager Darryl Sutter stepped in to lean on his players after a second straight loss on the road this week.
Steaming mad is a pretty good bet.

... Keenan, on the other hand, chooses to hide any unhappiness over the incident.
how does Macfarlane know this? talk about a reporter making up a story that has no basis; i miss JL already

Sounds like just a bunch of speculation. Keenan is saying ghe exact opposite of what the article writer is to writing to get across. A bunch of nothing created out of nothing.

As for Iginla, I'd like to see him as the future coach of this team one day. That'd be nice to see.

No kidding. The entire thing is speculation.

"I think the mix between Darryl and I is strong, and good, and the understanding is excellent," said Keenan.

Maybe even treaded on them at times.

Darryl knows his dressing room and knows the effects of his presence. Sounds like he we was just re-enforcing what everyone already knew, but felt the message should come from 'upstairs' as well.

He was effective last time and he probably plans to visit the locker room a certain number of times a year. I would never expect Sutter to do anything 'spur of the moment', his style is very calculated.

Yeah, the "stepping on toes" part is mentioned in the article by the writer, but he doesn't provide any evidence of that in the article in the way of quotes from actual people who apparently feel this way.

All he provides are quotes that suggest the opposite from Keenan and Regehr specifically.

Odd.

I stopped reading at the headline:

Sutter's #1 responsibility is to make the team win. The buck ends with him and he has the right and obligation to do whatever it takes (within league rules obviously). If that means chewing out the players, then that is what he has to do. It's not stepping on toes... it's called 'doing his job'.

I'm sure if Keenan was the GM, he'd do the same thing.

FYI, that would be the editor or copy editor's blunder. The reporter wouldn't have touched the headline.

Listening to Keenan on the Fan960 the other afternoon he emphasized several times that he has no problem with Sutter doing that. In fact encourages it.
"I embrace his input."
Don't take my word for it:
At the 5:01 mark roughly.

Also there's an interesting bit he mentions about Bertuzzi's supposed blind passes.

Yeah....he pretty much wrote a piece where his stated opinion is contrary to all available evidence.

Weird.

Posted this as a separate thread, but thought it was relevant here as well: http://www.calgaryherald.com/Keenan+...196/story.html

Quote:
Mike Keenan threw an iron-sized temper tantrum at the morning skate prior to Thursday's clash with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Calgary Flames head coach exploded upon witnessing some sloppy passing in a two-on-one drill against goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

Without a word, Keenan smacked his hockey stick against the boards.

Whack! Smash!

The stick broke into three pieces, and Keenan threw the fragment in hand away in disgust.

Someone called for a pass from Bert and then moved away from where he had called from.
