Icon59 Oilers sign Ryan Murray (1 yr, $750k)

Oilers finally get the player their scouts wanted over Yakupov but "higher ups" overrode them

They had to bring in a Stanley Cup champion because we did.

I mean, they needed a left D. So to them, perhaps.

Also blows my mind that left D Klefbom - currently on IR - is only 29. Dude seems like he's seen ALOT of Edmonton winters.

I know he was often hurt in his career, but was he hurt last year in Colorado or just scratched? Didn't even play a game in the playoffs.

Managed a whopping 0 goals, 4 assists and a -3 in 37 games with a strong Avalanche team last year.

They should sign Galchenyuk to a deal so they can have all 4 busts from the 2012 draft west their garbage jersey.

Depends if you think last year will be his new level of play or the exception.

Last year, he had it rough.

Years before, he was doing alright:

Either way, I kind of doubt he'll play a lot of games. 50 seems to be the cap before injuries derail him.

Nice. He's 45% better than Keith.

Always had a soft spot for Ryan Murray as one of my most tangential NHL connections - my wife worked with his mom.

Anyhow, it's a pretty minor "What if?" of hockey history but I wonder what would've happened in the alternate universe where the Oilers draft prairie-born, Oiler-fan Murray over Yakupov in the 2012 draft? Is he still injury prone? Does that team do better with a defensive defenceman? One thing's for certain - unless he's traded, he doesn't get his name on the Cup (though not sure he did last year based on games played - team may have to petition for him to be added?)
