As long as their schedules don’t overlap, Matthew Phillips is typically tuned in for every Calgary Flames game.

“I just see a guy that does not want to be denied,” praised Heat head coach Mitch Love. “He plays his best hockey when something is on the line. When we lose hockey games, often the next night, Matt Phillips is one of our best players, and that just shows you how competitive he is and how much he’s grown as a young pro, in terms of his leadership qualities. He’s a quiet leader but, man, for a guy who’s something like 5-foot-7 and 150 lb., he goes to the real crusty areas of a hockey rink to try to help his team win and that’s contagious among your group when a guy like that is doing that, especially when he is one of your better players and one of your leading scorers. And that’s something that he brings every night.

“Knock on wood, it’s very rare to have a night where I walk away from the rink and think, ‘Oh man, Matt Phillips didn’t bring it tonight.’ ”

As he pushes for a call to join them, this farmhand forward treats any Flames game like a bonus video session.

“I find it helps a lot when you watch those guys, especially with how our systems are modelled after what they’re doing,” Phillips said. “What I always look for is execution and how guys, within the system, see plays unfold and where they make their passes and how to relieve pressure and all that. Because I think that stuff does translate, and I find myself in similar positions throughout games. And I try to key in on the power-play stuff too because you can learn a lot. Obviously, Calgary has a lot of very skilled guys up front and how they distribute the puck on the power-play, those are good guys to watch and learn from.”

Can we give this guy a look already?! It’s nice to over-ripen prospects it’s actually a good thing IMO and seemingly has done wonders for Kylington, Mangiapane and Andersson but all those guys got first and second looks before sticking around. Give Phillips a chance to see how he measures up in this league and I have no doubts he’d grab the bull by the horns and run with it.

With goals from Byron Froese, Martin Pospisil and Justin Kirkland, the Stockton Heat (23-7-3-1) raced out to a two-goal lead through 40 minutes but could not hold on, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Henderson Silver Knights (17-11-2-1) Saturday at Stockton Arena.

I definitely heard Mackey was put on the taxi squad. Didn’t hear anything about Froese.

It takes keen eyes and constant observation to see what’s happening, and Pascall gave the rundown on some of the prospects working their way through the system.
Jakob Pelletier: “Any time you’re a first-year player, there’s always an adjustment there. It doesn’t matter if you’re a skilled, offensive player or a defensive defenseman. There are things you’re going to learn. Some players take longer than others to transition into the pro game. For Jakob, it took two games. Other guys, it can take quite a bit longer. He’s figured out what it takes to be successful not only scoring, but also to earn the coaches’ trust, be successful on the PK, be successful in puck battles. In saying that, it just shows how smart of a player Jakob is, how he possesses a level of pace and speed that he can get onto pucks quickly and off of checks quickly, and obviously he’s shown really good skill with his shot and puck-moving ability.”
Dustin Wolf: “First and foremost, he’s a talented goaltender that has had good success each year coming into pro. He has a great attitude and great preparation. In saying that, Jordan Sigalet and Thomas Speer are two people who share in his successes as an individual, making sure that he’s prepared and in a good situation, making sure he has a level of comfort in a new situation. They’ve really helped Dustin out. But you look at Dustin, and he’s such a smart player in terms of how he reads the game, how he tracks pucks, controls the flow of the game in a lot of cases. He’s just a smart hockey player, and obviously talented.”
