Nothing really to add other than that the guy who played Harvey during the 2004 playoff run was unhinged. One time he patted me on the shoulder hard enough that I was turning around to fight the jerk until I realized it was Harvey. I think I called him a caulk.

The original Harvey was spectacular. He was the mascot all others aspired to be.

While the current version(s) haven’t been as good, and while he may have gotten somewhat stale, it’s hard to imagine Harvey has fallen to second worse.

A bit of backstory - Brody came out of the closet this year and was worried that he’d have no friends show up at his birthday party. A post by Brody’s mom was was shared by Crackmacs and a bunch of the community showed up at his party so he would have lots of friends there. Harvey couldn’t make the party but he did show up in his own way.

Gritty is the GOAT NHL mascot IMO. He's the only one with mainstream appeal.

We could have had that with Scorch!

I agree with the Harvey the Hounds low placement... we need to update him or come up with another mascot all together. Mascots that make sense with the team seem to do better, like the Coyote in Arizona or Sabretooth in Buffalo. What does a hound have to do with Calgary, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was a mascot for a company (why do I think insurance company) sponsoring the Flames in the beginning and he just stuck around - Ralph the Dog too. I personally like Scorch - although he seems to be banned. What about a red and orange fire bird. I like Gritty too, so what the hell do I know anyhow.

He's a firehouse hound... Like for fighrefighters...

Also what does a Sabretooth tiger have to do with the Sabres? If anything, It should be a Buffalo (which also makes no sense, as it's the name of the city not, not the mascot). Or perhaps just a big sword?

Or maybe, its just something to make kids laugh (or cry, if you're Edmonton), so who really cares?

Scorch makes stoic, stern men giggle hysterically. So over-the-top bad, it becomes awesome.

Flames have teased Scorch here and there last year. I wonder what their plans are with him...

I like Harvey but I think the costume could use a bit of an update. The current costume kind of looks a bit old, cheap and amateurish. Not legendarily cheap and amateurish like Scorch though.

Scorch was extradited to Canada to finish out his sentence. He's allowed escorted day passes.

They seem to make sense to the fans and do better (more popular - higher ranked - weak I know) because they relate to the team or team name is some way.



Sabretooth as in Sabres (sword or sword teeth).... I admit Sabretooth is more of a word play than anything else.

I don't think you can get rid of Harvey at this point, imagine the outrage... people grew up with him and now they are grown up with their own kids, they want to show them Harvey. You just need to update him around the edges I think.


Another point.... what is it with Calgary and being first with Mascots.... Harvey was the first the mascot in the NHL and Ralph the first mascot in the CFL - good on us.

IIRC, Adirondack used a Dalmatian mascot named Buddy or something like that. It actually never occurred to me that Harvey is a firehouse dog. I can't believe it missed that connection.
