O’Brien and Odo had those kinds of qualities about them. Just salty jerks because of events compounding over the years.

I really like the set design, particularly engineering and transporter.
It was amusing how the big thing was getting Pike and Spock back, and then they just end up back on the ship with no transition. Just Pike leanin' back in his chair.

They have shuttles don’t they? Seems weird that they didn’t at least address why rescue wasn’t possible with a shuttle.

Re using a shuttle. And the Easter Egg.
The Nebula they were near was the one that Khan and Kirk battled in during TWOK. Remember when they went in their sensors and shields were useless, that effects has also happened in Ion storms. Its probably too high a risk to send a shuttle down.

They weren't near a nebula.
Illyrians were in ST: Ent, but actually originate from the books, where a book author made Number One an Illyrian, and now it's canon.

That episode completely fed my Star Trek geek. A new world a new problem , character development. A solution and “human” emotional ending.
So far meeting my expectations.

Dang a Strange New Worlds/Das Boot cross over? They even had Enterprise dive, hit crush depth, and use depth charges. Even with Enterprise's giant bridge it felt a bit claustropobic.

I just realized this show may have the strongest first episodes of any ST series sans TOS.

That was a great episode, every part of it was solid and filled with tension.
Yeah it was a salute to great submarine movies like Das Boot, Run Silent Run Deep. and others.
I loved that they resisted the need to show the Gorn, instead they became the boogey men of nightmares in this episode.
I also loved like Tigh in Battlestar Galactica that Pike had to sacrifice his people to save the ship on multiple occasions.
Chapel has really grown on me as a minor character as well.

I finally have a critique of New Worlds (I love classic trek and HATE Discovery and Picard, so basically it’s been a massive unexpected surprise).
They beam down in body armor in tonight’s episode.
I’m watching TOS with my 8 year old son, and it stood out. Basically geared for combat. No other good Star Trek show ever did that. Because they were explorers, not soldiers.
I liked that they had their phasers and their wits on TNG, TOS and DS9. And that was all they needed. Going into a Borg cube? Hand phasers. Jen Hadar going to attack? Rifles (oooohhh).
And on a writing note - what’s the point? Do we need armor to save people or something? I don’t recall it ever mattering.
Anyway, kind of the only critique so far for me. Super surprised the modern team had it hidden in them to be able to write decent Trek somehow. Keep it up!

I'm just envisioning that Gorn from TOS with all of the spinning and dynamic movement...

Also, Officer Ortegas the Helms...person...is rapidly becoming one of my favourite characters.
Everything about her, the snarky attitude, the quirky smirk, the witty quips.
This is what I mean, you have to incorporate the entire cast.
She's great!

Rando comment here... just got caught up on Picard and it reminds me that I'd really like a "new" Star Trek, meaning a new Enterprise, new captain, new crew, not a prequel (so set on or after Picard).

In STMP the security dudes were wearing body armor and helmets.
Maybe it was the whole experiment phase with the federation where they learned that particle weapons will defeat any armor that you wear.

I know we're only 4 episodes in, but IMO this series is easily the best Trek content since DS9. This show has completely sucked me in with terrific writing, likeable characters, fun and interesting stand-alone stories, and a charismatic captain. This is good stuff!

Part of me is more mad now; if they could make real decent/good trek all along, why the hell have they been force feeding us discovery and picard? Are they just trying to torture the long standing fans?
