Default Christmas Commercials

I was just watching TV and was surprised to see a Christmas commercial already. I know every year I am caught off guard by how early they start appearing but this year seems extra early. I was just wondering if there are any regulations on how early in the year companies can begin advertising for specific holidays like Christmas? And what other people think is an appropriate time for companies to start advertising for the Christmas season. Personally, I think Christmas commercials shouldn't start appearing before around the third week of November because by the time Christmas does come around, I am extremely annoyed with the monotonous music and lack of originality in them.

I remember those Scrooge commercials for Canadian Tire (Save like Scrooge, Spend like Santa?). Always seemed to start around Nov 1. I have more of an issue seeing the Sears Wishbook come in around end of August, definitely not thinking about the holiday season that early.

For the past decade or so, it's always been Nov 1. Some companies jump the gun, but most seem to know they might face backlash if they do it too early.

Yeah, I walked into Zellers at Chinook looking for something on October 19 (I made note of the date) and seeing a Christmas setup already.

One of my fondest annual Christmas traditions is enjoying the bitching that occurs at the first sight of Christmas this time of the year. It's as seasonal as eggnog and as deliciously intoxicating.

I was walking home yesterday and saw that a house on my street has a huge nativity scene up on their lawn already. Jesus.

Some retail business may do 70-80% of their annual sales in the 2 months leading up to Christmas. As of this morning there are only 53 selling days left.

My neighbor has had his xmas lights up (and on) for about a week now. I am all for putting up the lights a little early while the weather is mild but I personally don't really think about christmas until December.

Just realized the wife is going to be nagging me to take her out to Swiss Chalet for festive special. I assume it must be starting soon if not already.

I'm a firm believer in Christmas decorations, merchandise, and commercials should not be on the shelves or shown until November 12 (give Remembrance Day its proper due).

That said ...

Greatest Christmas commercial, ever
