The fact he didn’t have any of that ready to go makes me thing that it wasn’t ready because he wasn’t sure he’d actually be leaving.

That's fine. But he should be on 960 talking to Steinberg now instead of other shows. We're the local station that watched and promoted him for 11 years.

Wow after watching that interview this is now the saltiest i've been since the news broke he signed in Columbus. There is just so much bull#### in this interview it's actually shocking. He can't even convince himself what he's saying is true.
Also lol at this:
Tim: Have you talked to your former team mates since you signed this deal?
Johnny: Yeah I have! *Talks only about Sean Monahan*

Flames organization controls a lot of the discussion on Sportsnet 960.
I’ve actually noticed a lot more Stampeders talk than the usual Flames talk on the station since Tuesday.
My guess is the Flames org might not really want him talking on 960 right now, they are controlling the narrative on their home station.

If I was Fletcher that’s what I would have pitched.

Dont think thats how it works. Once that initial UFA opportunity is used then that 8th year is gone like a fart in the wind.
But they could do a 1 year then a 7. But....what if he gets hurt? What if he phones it in?

You guys have been broken up with before, right?
Take solace in the fact that he's giving all this *sexy strut* up for a dud hockey club.
It's his loss.
Now let's OS Laine and take away his sniper.

He could do it but it would have had to have been after the 2022-2023 trade deadline
And yeah a big risk on his part but obviously would have needed to be a gentleman’s agreement with Philly GM and ownership.
Quote:
8 Year Contracts for Players Re-Signing
The previous CBA allowed players signing with their existing team to sign contracts up to 8 years in length, and players signing with other teams a maximum term of 7 years. The cut-off was that a player had to be on a team’s roster at the most recent Trade Deadline in order to sign an extension that included an 8th year. The most prominent example was Erik Karlsson being traded from Ottawa to San Jose in Sept 2018, when his contract had one year remaining (expired July 1, 2019). He was eligible to sign an extension as of July 1, 2018, but since he was with Ottawa at the Feb 2019 trade deadline, he could only sign an 8-year extension with Ottawa until after the Feb 2020 trade deadline passed with him on San Jose’s roster.

What would you offer though? 8.4x5 years?

My conclusion at this time
1) Johnny has no love for the team. Doesn’t want to be part of it anymore.
Or
2)Wife wears the pants in the house. Treliving was negotiating with the wrong person

The bare minimum of what the BJs can't match after signing Gaudreau.
Whatever that is.
We can offload Lucic. This is a more worthy albatross because tasty revenge.

Three problems with offer sheeting Laine:
1) Big contract and long term means big risk.
2) This team is already reeling from years and years of trading away futures. Is it really willing to send away a bunch more, especially with next year's draft being the deepest in years?
3) A top line of Laine-Lindholm-Tkachuk would have 3 shooters on it and no set-up man.

I'm honestly more sad seeing Flames fans turning on him so quickly than him leaving, and sad that fans are probably going to boo him when he comes back. It just feels like there is so much irrational hate right now.
It doesn't matter what he says or what he does, people aren't going accept it. They'll demand he acknowledges / thanks the fans, but when he does, they'll take it as insincere. Johnny's in a no win situation at this point.

Anyway, Johnny will be on Tim and Friends in a few minutes. Undoubtedly it will be a softball fluff piece but something to hopefully read into after his interview.

I imagine most communication goes through the agent, but I actually think it would be weird if there weren't a few instances where everyone is on the same call. At least the initial pitch we heard about, and at least once more along the way if/when things get close.

Really? 8x8 or 8x8.5 were more likely the range we've heard about.

He could still sign for 8, but not until the day after the TDL. On Jan. 1 he could sign for 7.

You mean....essentially the same as he's making now. On this contract. That he signed on Wednesday.
Yeah. Not much different than this one.

His interview with Tim definitely softened things for me and brought the human element back from and center, and I thought he said some pretty genuine and warm things about the people of Calgary.
I was surprised to see people here taking it the opposite and still now saying “#### you” to the screen watching it. It’s pretty sad.
I’ll appreciate however he ends up saying his thank yous and goodbye to Calgary.
