Many people are losing their chit about wanting the Flames the to sign Jagr, yet for a 2M one year deal are pissing on a 12 year younger Vanek who out produced Jags last season. A good no risk deal for the Canucks. Bet he out produces Six Million Dollar Man Loui Eriksson.
Strange situation in Vancouver. A lot of UFA signings. Guess they're not ready for a true rebuild while the Sedins are still playing. Perfect.

These signings were not to improve, they are all short term low $$ amount to flip and not force the prospects to in roles they haven't earned
at least a few of the signings should have decent enough seasons to be movable at the deadline for assets

That's exactly what a rebuilding team should be doing. I don't think Vanek will end up being an example, but in general you load up on cheap UFA's that can be flipped for picks after producing with big minutes on a **** team, that they wouldn't have got elsewhere.

Reminds me of how the Leafs signed a bunch of UFAs and flipped them for assets. Worked well for them. The Canucks will be bad even with the signings.
Good signing. Vanek was one of the best UFAs still available IMO

Vanek's days of being sought after are done. He got a 3rd and waiver wire dman in return last deadline even when he was having a decent year.
This year he might fetch a 4th? a nothing signing.

Favourite Vanek memory is his embarrassing defensive effort on the Backlund/Frolik give-and-go goal last year:

Yeah guys that last this long aren't going to be coveted at the deadline unless he really overperforms. Might fetch them a David Jones type of return.
On the plus side for the Canucks, he probably doesn't hurt their draft standing as he won't contribute much to winning.

Thomas Vanek is not that good anymore. I don't care that he put up decent offensive numbers for the Red Wings last year.

The Canucks can become like the Leafs, Oilers and the Flames a very good team that built through the draft mostly. Most of our top players and the same goes for the Oilers and the Leafs were drafted with high picks and later picks(mostly for the Flames). The Canucks will have high picks because they suck and lots of picks because they can sell off a lot assets, so in 2-3 years they may became what the Flames are now.

Except that he isn't signed for six more years, which helps with his value.

The Canucks haven't picked a Monahan (Horvat would have to grow quite a bit), Gaudreau, Tkachuk (lmao they could have, literally) or Brodie yet. So they're a bit behind and have some high drafting in a few consecutive years to do.
Many of their most promising young players are of the middle six complimentary player variety. Not too many blue chippers in there. In fact their team is a collection of mediocre to average NHLers with skill, but not elite skill. That's their main problem.

My fear with the Canucks, is that Jim & Trevor get "the axe".

I think it's odd that on a team that should be tanking they are adding guys like Vanek and Gagner who may help them be good enough not to pick top 3 but I don't see the downside otherwise. If he does well then they can flip him at the deadline for a 3rd round pick and if he stinks then it's a good thing as they badly need a top 3 pick at the coming draft.

To be fair I'd say Brock Boeser and Juolevi are considered blue chippers. Ben Hutton is a good piece and they got prett lucky with Troy Stetcher wanting to sign there Their most recent draft pick Petterson has very high skill too. But yeah overall they are lacking a couple high end pieces still. Horvat, Baertschi and Granlund all likely 2nd liners. Virtanen still a question mark.
Overall they'd loook good for the future if they can draft one more 1st liner and a top two dman.

Don't write off Goldobin. I hate the Canucks but that kid oozes skill, just stupid amounts of speed and talent. I think he gets a chance in camp and stays up potentially playing alongside the Sedin's or Sutter for depth scoring.
