It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam "MCA" Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.
They were one of my favorite groups growing up. I'm really surprised, I was under the impression he was getting better. The group had said they would not tour until Yauch had recovered.
I'm happy the group released a last album with MCA last year. They had delayed the album for a couple of years after Yauch's diagnosis. The fact that Yauch still wanted to release the album, even while very sick, shows how much he loved what he did.
still blast So Whatcha Want as part of my early 90's mix every few weeks in the car. final line still kicks ass..."so if you're hot to trot, you think you're slicker than grease, I got news for your crew, you'll be sucking like a leech"
I'm surprised the obligatory "who's MCA?" or "sorry, I don't know how to use google, who's the Beastie Boys and why should I care?" post hasn't shown up yet.
I used to drive around listening to Paul's Boutique over and over, I still have that blue cassette around somewhere. I'm so bummed right now. R.I.P. MCA
My friends and I used to play Gratitude all the time as a cover song back when I still played bass. Some of their music was pretty complex and detailed, but that song is brilliant in its simplicity.

I think it's because they transcended genres. Even people who don't love them still think they are at least "fun".

yeah, I get that more people would know who they are than say, Nate Dogg, but it always still bugs me when you have a string of consecutive posts saying "dang too bad, RIP", with one "who the hell was he, somebody type me out a complete bio" stuck in there. what was the point of click on the thread, that's like walking into a memorial service and shouting "hey who's that guy lying there? sounds like he was important to you but I don't know who he is!!"
