Yikes... I should really put my ear guards back in. I haven't had them in for the past 15 years.

Yes...but unlike the pros you have to go to work tomorrow.
Talk to any dentist - they see the damage every week and recommend a full cage.

Unfortunate what happened with little, but realistically, how many guys get hit in the ear? I'd be more concerned about the throat being unprotected, but suddenly to say everyone should have mandatory ear protection? Sounds a little much when there hasn't been much of a history with ear related concussions that I know of.

I'm lucky. I didn't wear a visor until I was about 35. I took a puck off of the logo on my helmet and I thought that was too close. Took me two years to finally get the visor. So what happened in my first game with a visor? Slapper from the point takes a weird rebound off of the goalies pad and hits me on the visor. I was never hit in the face until that day but what timing was that to put the visor on?

After a few years I decided I'm safer with a full face shield. Almost a couple months later I took one in the shield that surely saved me from lost teeth. I'm lucky with my timing.

I took my ear guards off until i got hit in the ear with the puck.

I didnt like the sound very much, so now I leave them on.

You don't only have to make reactionary decisions when something is already clearly going wrong. There is merit in prevention based measures. Make sure it doesn't happen in the first place.

Putting a flap to cover your ears shouldn't take away from a player's skillset.

Exactly. Let's wait until someone dies from a puck to the face until we decide to put face masks on. That's what had to happen until helmets were finally made mandatory. (And even that was instantaneous stupidly.)

Playing without helmets seems incredibly reckless and dumb now doesn't it? The face masks is the same deal. How many times per game do high sticking occur? And each time there's a risk to someone's teeth, eyes, and face in general from skates and 100 mph pucks.

It's gonna happen at some point. And it's gonna be a dark day.

Pretty sure those contracts are covered 100 percent by insurance and would not be subject to escrow (which could be huge over the next couple years). Financially and health wise it is a no-brainer to retire.
