Regardless of your views on the subject, you have to admit this chart is visually stunning. Verses are the white bars and the contradictions are linked via the red arcs.

I thought the matter of science vs. religion had already been settled.

I thought science had to stay at least 500 feet from religion at all times?

Oh, and the link has a link to the .pdf of the image. Insta-download!

I'd love to have it printed out and framed as a poster.

Sam Harris is perhaps my favorite atheist thinker.

Here's a link to the pdf files.

Yeah, ambitious. Basically sidetracking this little project which has been going on for... uh like 400 years.

That would make a great desktop background. I think I'm going to put it up as a replacement to my current one:

In all fairness, this book is thousands and thousands of years old. When you have these stories being passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years, of course you are going to find contradictions. And when you have multiple authors (Mathew, Mark, Luke, John for example) writting about the life of a person (Jesus) you're going to find contradictions.

Atheists who look at the bible as something other than allegory and metaphor are as silly as believers who view it is something other than allegory and metaphor.

263 and 264 and 323 and 324 are the same so there are actually only 437 contradictions listed

When you make something up out of thin air how are you expected to get all the facts straight?

I don't know if it's in there, but my favorite one is the story of Moses and the plagues in Egypt. The cattle managed to get killed twice, some of them even three times!

Exodus 9:6, all the livestock are killed in a pestilence.

Then in 9:18 there's a warning of a massive hail storm, and in 9:19 Moses is supposed to warn Pharaoh to bring his livestock so they don't die. Again.

Then in 11:5 it's warned the first born are going to die, including the twice dead first born of all the cattle.

And in 12:29 the threat is followed through on all the firstborn of the cattle were smote. Again.

Not to mention that the gospel authors weren't even first hand witnesses.

The Bible is FAR more interesting if you embrace the differences and start to look at where the differences come from. Instead of trying to mash the gospels together to come up with some 5th gospel with no contradictions that no one ever wrote, ask why did Luke change Mark one way and Matthew change Mark another; there's theological reasons that are very interesting.

I don't think the atheists are looking at the Bible as something other than allegory and metaphor.. if they did they wouldn't be atheists. Something like this is in response to believers who view it as something other than allegory and metaphor.

@ Photon: There is a 5th gospel. It's called "Q".

The source material for Luke and Matthew that is not contained in Mark is often refered to as "Q". They don't know whether Q is a gospel, or what it is, likely another writing, or writings.

I don't see what the big deal is. The bible is a collection of books whose authorship spans a huge span of time, multiple languages, multiple cultures, and is largely derived from an oral story telling tradition.

If there were no discrepancies or contradictions, we'd have even less insight into the development of the theological, social, and moral and even historical underpinnings of some of the earliest outposts of human culture.
