Flames should make a serious play for Jakub Chychrun.

Really grinds my freaking gears that the Flames did it the right way and drafted their own #1 dman but then the guy didn't want to sign with them.

Why, he’s not a number #1.

And that the Flames hands were forced to give him away as a throw in because he made it known he was going exercise the option he is allowed to exercise within the rules.
Nice ####ing rules.

I wonder what kind of contract Josh Manson is going to be getting.
That's a guy that would easily be coveted by both Treliving and Sutter.
Like a better version of Gudbranson.

Mackey is nearly a year older than Kylington. His ceiling, IMO, is as a #5/6 D. He doesn't have much offensive upside.

He had 21 points in 47 games this year on a very bad Coyotes team, where the only other D of note was Shane "What is a defensive zone" Gostibehere. The year prior, he was 10th in NHL D scoring with 41 points in 56 games. He's an excellent all-around player, and minute-muncher, who absolutely has #1 D-man in him-he just needs a change of scenery. Put him with Sutter, and watch out!

Mackey has 52 pts in 80 AHL games, and 4 pts in 9 NHL games-he'll never play on a top-pairing, but I could see him putting up 30ish points in a year or two on a 2nd pairing with a guy like Tanev....

You don't just trade guys like Kylington. You let them develop and grow. The Flames are incredibly thin on the left side as it is.

The problem that the Flames have (if you can call it a problem) is Valimaki. In order to maximize his potential he is going to have to start showing something at the highest level. Unfortunately for him, Mackey is a well rounded defenseman. With not a lot of holes in his game, I could see him becoming a Sutter favorite for the bottom pairing really quickly.
Do you trade Valimaki while he has decent value as a chip, or do you keep him as the Stockton #1D and bring him up for injury replacement? He might not even get that chance, as I can guarantee that Tre brings in a Stone or Stone-like 7D.

Chychrun misses 20 games in a good year, and he has chronic knee issues.
Pass.

I agree, and I wonder if it's not time to move on from Val. Problem with that is that the pipeline for D is frightfully thin, at least when it comes to sure-fire NHL talent. Kuznetsov, Poirier, and Boltmann have plenty of warts, and Whynot and Jordan had woefully bad years. It's way too early to give up on them, but we need more talent in this area-and only 3 picks in this year's draft.

68, 50, 53, and 47 are not great game totals for the four non-COVID years he’s played. Not exactly a great sign when the only season he’s finished was the one where they only played 56 games.

He said he misses 20 in a good year...I think playing 56 of 56 and missing zero games would be considered his good year

If BT can some how get Josh Manson, I would be totally on board with that. Tough, good skater, has some offensive upside, he would definitely be a better version of Gudbranson (and he was awesome for us this year).

Another interesting UFA name is LW Mason Marchment. He's only 27, 6'4", and had 47 points in 54 games this year. His father played 6 seasons for Darryl in San Jose, and signed with the Flames under Sutter for his final season in 2005-06. Mason attended a Flames rookie camp years ago as well.

Unless Johnny walks and/or the Flames trade some expensive players, hard to imagine they are players for any UFA’s.
They cannot afford their existing players right now.
And as we all know, playing the UFA game is very expensive.

Valimaki has little trade value. The Flames may also have no bottom pair with little money left to sign one. I don’t think they will trade him
