I know he's an awesome goalie, but 7 years for a 31 year old? Jesus Christ!

Good for him. The guy has been single-handedly carrying the Rangers for the last ~decade without the proper support. You can tell he is getting frustrated in his interviews. Good on him for milking management for as much as he can.

Although I agree with everything you said here, the Rangers still haven't really gotten that deep into the playoffs with King Henrik as their goaltender. What one conference finals? I know he is the reason they got that far or even make the playoffs but that is a lot of term & coin for a 31 year old goalie.

Way too long of term. But thought Slats would give him 8 years actually

Basically takes him to retirement.

I know Lundqvist is one of the best goalies in the league and that he is one of the biggest parts of that team, if not the biggest, but I'm philosophically against attributing that much cap hit to a goalie.

Rask and Rinne are at $7M and there's a handful in the $6M range.

Malkin, Perry, Ovechkin and Crosby are currently at $8.5M cap hit or above.

The goalie market is kind of weird. They are the most important part of the team on a night-to-night basis, but there are lots of them available and there's lots of ways to build a team so that having a "good enough" goalie (of which there's lots around), makes you a contender.

I was at the Jets / Rangers game the other night, and Cam Talbot was shaky, but definitely looked like an NHL goalie.

I wonder what he thinks of this extension. Lots of NYR fans were yelling bad things about Lundqvist and cheering Talbot - even though Lundqvist was on the bench.

Great goalie but a few years too long and a million and a half too much.

That's too much! It is such a great deal for both sides! Well, so much for the CBA. The deal is way too short. Hartley should be fired. I can't believe he signed for such a low amount. How can they afford him? Butler sucks. We suffered a lockout for this?

What else did I miss?

No goalie is worth this, especially one who has not proven much in the playoffs.

I like this. Handcuffs NYR to their goalie, meaning when they seek cap relief, it will just be another team coming groveling at Calgary's doorstep

Just for comparison, the highest salary Wayne Gretzky ever made in a single season to play hockey was $6.5M. Players today have it good.

Too long for too much money. I would have thought 3-5 years around $7mil. Top 3 goalie in the league, but he's in his 30s. I have a feeling this contract will look almost as bad as the Luongo contract in a few years.

The term is fine considering he will be 38 when it ends. Goalies seem to have longer careers. I think he is over paid by $1 million, but when Rask and Rinne are getting $7 million i guess its not that far off.

As for cap hit i don't think its going to matter. The cap is going way up and i would not be surprised if they buy out Richards.
