The refs should be suspended a few games for calling it.
That was an embarrassing bit of officiating.

It is similar (but not the same) to the Buffalo hit at 0:57 in the DoPS educational video, where they say "poor angle of approach".

Edit: main difference is that the Buffalo player was moving and Gio wasn't.

If Gio is not moving how can he have a "poor angle of approach"? He is being approached, so the angle is choses by Aho.

Hope the kid is OK ,but damn you get pummeled in junior hockey trying to do that let alone the NHL

Guy 5 feet away should have the balls to make the appropriate call and not just make a.call based on an injury

Aho skated right into him as much as Giordano hit him. There should be no way he's suspended but NHL these days. Nothing dirty about it.

Canes coach, Peters, does not sound like he blames Gio.

So during this 7 game winning streak, opposition star players hasn't been lucky.

I still can't tell where the primary point of contact was. Assuming the league should have no issue blowing up the video and slowing it down to tell: if primary contact us the chin then yes suspension, if it's the chest then no.

Principle point of contact was the head. No intent to hit the head
Should be 1 game suspension
https://mobile.twitter.com/TheFanChi...814592/video/1
Head shots are like a high stick regardless of why it occurs the guy whose shoulder does it is responsible. These type of hit is dangerous enough to be completely removed from the game.
I also wouldn't mind fines for putting yourself in a vulnerable position to be developed to discourage the type of recklessness of Aho but Gio has to not hit the head.

I just don't get it. You can't toe drag across the middle of the ice in front of the net with your head down in front of a defenceman in the NHL and not expect a hit. I'm not sure how else Gio is expected to play this.

A fine isn't going to be anymore discouraging than the concussions suffered when you get caught doing it. League doesn't need to interject to discourage the reckless behaviour, all they need to interject on is players taking advantage of each other and ruining careers and quality of lives of there fellow players when one of them makes an ill advised mistake in the heat of the moment in a super fast paced game.

Sure you can, but you’ll end up face down on the ice most times answering “what day is it?” with “potato”

The whole point isn't that the move was stupid, it's to try and prevent players from devastating one another when mistakes get made. That's the culture change they are trying to impact.
All Gio needs to do there to prevent a goal is separate Aho from the puck. He doesn't need to make a statement hit. I have no issue with Gio trying for a statement hit as he did, nor Iam I saying the hit makes Gio dirty. But the whole point is putting full responsibility on the person hitting if you take advantage of a mistake and go for a lights out hit vs simple puck separation. If you can't ensure proper execution of said hit, you might pay the price. Aho is going to pay the price regardless for his mistake.

Or, it's a similar hit to that made by Kronwall at 1:25, where the receiving player put himself in a position to make head contact unavoidable.

I don't think he should be suspended. I agree that he shouldn't have even been penalized for it.
