I mean, even if they weren't hosting, Kucherov is first in the league in points, Stamkos is second. They are going.
Hedman's is potentially only behind Doughty in the Norris race right now. Sportsnet just gave Hedman their mid-season Norris award.
And then for starting goalies, Vasilevskiy is the clear front runner in goalie stats with the best save percentage, best GAA, and most wins. Similarly, and obviously, Sportnet picked them for their Vezina winner.
It lined up nicely for them that they are hosting when they are also dominating the league. But in any other year, all 4 would be deserving to go as well.

I'm surprised they couldn't find a spot for someone third overall in dmen scoring (Gostisbehere).

Scoring Winger

It's a bit comical that everyone is worked up on who should be there and who shouldn't based on points. The all stars is based on fan favorites and fan votes. Yes, Monahan is killing it in goals this year. But he's boring Sean Monahan. Johnny will always be a lock for Calgary.
Smith should be there there instead of Quick though. Smith is dynamic, and having him on the 3 on 3 game would basically be giving the pacific an extra player. He's fun to watch. And who else could score with a goalie stick from one end to the other through a tiny hole.

Really ridiculous Monahan isn't gonna be there, 20 goals and 39 pts but that's the format I guess.

Why is James Neal going over someone like Karlsson or Marchessault?

The All Star game is all about excitement
Which is why Monahan does not want to participate.

Karlsson/Marchessault>>Neal
Even Reilly Smith or David Perron would be better choices than Neal

Congrats to Gaudreau. Monahan is deserving but I knew it was going to be tough with the small roster and every team needing a player.
The Vegas picks are a little strange. Fleury has only played 12 games and Neal is their 5th leading scorer.
I would have replaced Fleury with Gibson and Neal with Marchessault. Picking Gibson also means you no longer need to pick Rickell. As a homer I would replace him with Monahan however Karlsson, Smith or Perron from Vegas would also be deserving choices.

Irs funny how the fans care more about who makes the All Star team than the actual players. I'm sure most would rather not go so they could rest/see family/whatever instead

Johnny earns it every year and around the NHL is exciting to watch.
Monahan gets the snub yet again and all he does is be consistantly in the top 10-20 in either goals or points.
5 straight 20+ goal seasons and he is on pace for a career year.
He should have been selected but you would
think he is in next 1-3 as an injury alternate?

It's because Neal was the defacto 'legitimate' Vegas player at the start of the year. His All-Star pass was stamped on game one. Same deal with MAF. But I don't mind the GK being over represented in their first year. Especially considering what they've done to the standings.
As for some of the other selections... Well the ASG isn't about selling the steak. It's all about the sizzle. Johnny sizzles. Monahan.. less so. Someone brought up the fact that this is Kopitars 4th ASG earlier in the thread and it's the same deal. Kopitar has no sizzle, despite being a top 10 center.
This is primarily an opportunity for star players and national advertisers to congregate at one place. The on ice stuff is just spectacle.

I hope Gaudreau is on another line just so he doesn't make McOverpaid look good.
