lanny Sportsnet Q&A with Lanny McDonald

Q&A: Lanny McDonald on Hockey Day, Flames, Olympics, Johnny Bower

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/q...-johnny-bower/

Flames content is in the middle third of the article, Lanny answers questions about GG's stick throw, the Flames' hot streak, JG and Chucky.

Nice to see that Lanny still follows the Flames fairly closely and to hear his perspective on the current Flames and who they compare to from Lanny's playing days.

(My first thread, sorry if a repeat or low content)

That was a great interview!

My favorite Lanny memory is actually not from his playing career (and i was lucky enough to be there for both goal 500 and point 1000) It was that picture of him in jeans, old shirt and gloves after the 2013 floods. he was out there helping people in Calgary dig out from the flood, same as the rest of the volunteers. He was out there helping. Because he's awesome.

Jarome Iginla is the best player in Flames' hockey history. But Lanny is quite easily the city's most recognizable and famous icon of all time. That photo of him helping out in the flood in just awesome. Dude is still ripped.

Nothing but a class act and we are lucky to have him as our ambassador.

Absolutely. I still remember that day in 1989, right after the Cup win, when every C-train had a big red Lanny moustache mounted on the front. You can't get any more Calgary than that.

Before Lanny, the Flames were still transplanted Atlantans.

It seems like the Flames have had some many classy individuals pass through its rank as players.

Iggy and Lanny come to mind, but are there other ones?

Peplinski, Lanny and a few other vets set a tone for the franchise when it came to community involvement. It's lasted for decades.

What about Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Roberts or Joe Mullen? They were some of my favorite players growing up, but I never knew much about their personalities on the ice or off.

I was going to say, as far as being Iconic is concerned nothing will ever beat 'The 'Stache.'

In addition to the ones mentioned, Stajan.

Berezan did quite a bit IIRC. But maybe mostly as an alumnus. Joe N. won the Clancy one year (Lanny won the first one and Iggy won it later).

First recipient of the King Clancy Trophy for community service. The NHL pretty much created the trophy with the example that players like McDonald lead.

These days, charitable causes are contractual obligations. No discredit to the players of today (whom I am sure are just as dedicated), but guys like Lanny did it because it was just the right thing to do.

A little off the topic but still related to Lanny, who here remembers Lanny’s 66 goal season? It was just a little before my time (I was born in 76) and I remember my Dad being excited about what a great season he was having, but not much else. What happened that year that Lanny had such a great goal scoring year?
