Is there a player in the league with a larger gap between fan perception and league reality than Cody Franson. I may be off base but it seems like he's a guy that the analytical community has really pushed. Moreover, ever free agency he's looked at as a guy that will be sought after - and yet he just sits there. And now he goes on waivers, with most of us (including myself) believing he would be snapped up for sure.
Does he just suck and we don't see it?

Brent Seabrook is still on the ice, with the six other defenseman already in the room. In other words, it looks like Seabrook might be a scratch tonight.

Seabrook still on the ice. Almost certainly a healthy scratch.

In other news, Brent Seabrook also started to develop an odd rash on his back.

If you ever want proof that team's have different metrics than the public - Franson is exhibit A. Stat guys have expected big contracts when this guy goes to free agency only for him to land a small 2 year deal with Buffalo and then a PTO with Chicago. Now he clears waivers.
Obviously teams are looking at looking at something else than we have or they are all dumb (I'll take the former here)

Even if his shot does miss the net, it's going to make defenders move. It's going to make goalies react differently other than I don't know, maybe the napping position they've become accustom to when up against that flames powerhouse power play.
Edit: here's what we know of the Flames PP so far.
Pass, pass, indecisive, yeah I'm gonna pass, oh a pass cross ice hoping for tip, pass intercepted, cleared. Regroup, skate up to red line drop pass to Johnny, pass pass pass.
I don't think I've missed anything.
|
My concern isn’t that he will miss the net, it’s that he won’t have enough time to get his shot off at all and will also fumble his passes more often than Gio or Hamilton would.
Agree that it wouldn’t hurt to try something new though, it might be worth a shot. I just don’t see many power play systems these days that generate through a big slap shot. The game is different now, players are too quick to block shots. Now it’s all about strafing the blue line and firing off a quick wrister that can sneak though.

Stone shoots the puck as his first option whenever he is on the ice, both PP and at even strength. He's probably a leader in shot attempts per 60m among the defencemen. And I've seen it go through maybe twice. He gets it through no more than "bad" Wideman did.
I'd much prefer Gio and Dougie on the points on the first unit. Gio can shoot almost as hard (see the skills competition) and Dougie's wrister is deadly, when he sneaks in to the circle.
I'd like to see :
Johnny, Monahan, Tkachuk
Gio, Hamilton
Bennett, Backlund, Ferland,
Brodie, Jankowski
Janko's got a good wrister, a decent slapper, he can pass well, and he's got the reach to get to loose pucks near the line. He's also got the reach and wheels sufficient to defend when the play goes the other way.

Hamilton should obviously be the first PP quarterback. But I'm not averse to just trying something different every once in a while.
Anyway, as for the Cody Franson thing, it's utterly ridiculous that he wasn't claimed on a $1M deal. That's a zero risk proposition. I'm not saying the Flames should have claimed him, but someone absolutely should have. There are probably a dozen teams for which he's a clear upgrade. I mean for Christ's sake, the Flyers have Andy MacDonald on their second pairing.

Huh??
Is he recovering from an injury or something? I thought he was still a big part of the hawks core, never realized his game had started going down hill.
Weren't the oilers fans sure that he'd eventually become an oiler?

On the NHL satellite radio station they called him the anti Kris Russell for similar reasons.
One thing about Franson is that he is quite slow and that seems to be poison for GM's.

Oh man Chicago is REALLY screwed with that Seabrook contract aren't they?
Oh that's right, it's the NHL...no they aren't screwed and will easily find a way to weasel out of it if need be.
