Default Francis: Ward should lose interim tag and be hired full-time

Quote:
Now may not be the time to make such an announcement, given the suspended animation the league finds itself in.

But make no mistake, it should happen.

If indeed this season is ultimately scrapped due to an extended COVID-19 battle, clarifying Ward’s status should be one of Treliving’s first orders of business.

After all, the numbers don’t lie.

When word of Bill Peters’ racial transgressions surfaced on Nov. 25, the Flames sat 26th in the league in points percentage at 12-12-4.

From the time Ward was promoted from associate coach to interim boss, the Flames went 24-15-3 despite a whirlwind of speculation and uncertainty that hovered over the franchise.

Quote:
The players responded favourably, playing at a .616 clip (8th in the league) that would have landed the club at 101 points over an 82-game schedule.

In that time, the team’s offence went from 30th (2.37 goals per game) to 10th (3.26).

They tightened up defensively and saw their power play go from 22nd in their first 27 games, to third over the balance of the year, connecting at a 25.2 per cent rate.

I disagree. I would be fine with keeping Ward in an associate role but I had pretty substantial issues with some of his player deployment decisions and game management capabilities.

IF he were the full time head coach, I'd hope they add an experienced former head coach to his staff

It’s one of those weird situations where the Flames really haven’t passed the smell test. They’ve come out very flat at times and it’s honestly been a very disheartening season as a fan to be quite honest.

However if you just look at the numbers and hadn’t watched the team I could see how you’d consider it a no brainer to hire him as the head coach.

I’m truly stuck in the middle. The results have been there. But something just seems off about this team and maybe it’s just some of the players the more I think about it?

No thank you. He seems like a nice guy and I wouldn’t mind giving him his old job back but I want someone more proven.

I want them to hire Bruce Boudreau, and keep Ward as associate coach (if he still wants the job).

I think we should call a timeout on this as it is the last minute of the season.

We have this core for another 2 years, do we want another coaching experiment? Let's get a real winning coach for a change.

I think Ward has been fine. Maybe not the solution, but definitely not the problem either.

If the Flames don't land a proven coach, I would be happy to see what Ward could do with a full season.

I think they should definitely at least keep him on as an associate coach.

In other circumstances sure.

No way I'd do it with Boudreau, Gallant, etc all available still.

Go away Francis. Your absence is one of the few positives to come out of the NHL shutdown.

If they make Ward head coach, I can see assistant coach Ray Edwards moving back to his previous player development role and another guy brought in (Cail MacLean?). That's if they keep it in-house.

Since i don't believe they will finish the season , my gut tells me they will bring Ward back. He made improvements and for me it was coming down to if the players responded in playoffs. Don't get me wrong he makes many rookie mistakes as a coach but only time will tell if he learns from them.

I imagine Edwards goes back to his prior role regardless of what happens.

This is Brad Treliving's last chance hiring a coach unless the team has some serious playoff success with the next one. Is Geoff Ward the guy to risk that on after what we've seen so far? I don't believe he is.

I'm no Francis fan, but he's right-ownership won't pay top dollar for an elite coach like Laviolette or Boudreau, considering that they probably had to buy out Peters. Ward is probably the Man going forward.

Personally, I'd want a younger coach who can work with the speculated whingers we have. We've tried the old hardasses, and guys eventually tune them out. Time to try something a bit more new age with a younger coach who can work with these young millionaires. Not a fan of Laviolette, and I think Boudreau would give tough love, so no to that right now. Gallant, though not young would be more what I'd aim for this time around with this group. It's worth the shot.
