So the difference between the two numbers is a league minimum player each year. Not sure how big a win that is, but in a cap world every little bit helps, so this works for the Oilers.

I did not... Why bother?
Solid, as in: one of the best players commiting to Edmonton for another 9 years.

No, you just don't see it. Chiarelli is a genius and McDavid is obviously a team player making huge sacrifices to ensure multiple Cups. Multiple.
I mean why can't you see it?

What bugs me is that players below his salary will make less money. Fill the owners pockets, players get less.

except the initial number was likely just a PR move...
if he puts up 120+ points its worth it IMO...if he is right around 90-100 its pretty steep. We will see how his numbers improve

At $12.5MM AAV this seems like as good a deal as the Oilers were ever going to get - in the end McDavid wasn't as greedy as he could have been.

Not with Chiarelli in charge. He will just give the extra cap savings to Draisaitl when he doesn't need to.

Except not really lining the owners pockets because there is a salary cap and players get 50% of league wide revenues.
If every player on the oilers (or any team) took 6% less, which is what mcDavid did, it frees up $4.5m of salary cap. Which is the addition of a player like Hamonic or Stone. Or the difference between a Brouwer and a Hossa. Its meaningful.
The silver lining is that the oilers are still ####ed because they can't manage the cap. And either way they will lose Maroon and RNH at the end of this season.

Nothing bad to say about locking a young generational player up long term (that they were gifted for being one of the worst run franchises in pro sports for a decade).
It's the Lucic / Russel combo added to this signing (and Draisaitl's pending number) that is killer.
Russell / Lucic combined Cap hit = $10 Million
+ McDavid @ 12.50
+ Draisaitl @ (let's say 8)
=======================
$30.5 Million for those four players.
That's not evening mentioning the 11.5 million combo of Sekera and Ryan Nothing-Happens
Good luck with that.

An improvement over $13.25M AAV, but Edmonton still wins by getting max term.
I'm happy he didn't subscribe to the $97M/8 years thing. Just take the money; your uniform number isn't worth giving up $3M for vanity reasons...

McDavid signed for slightly less percent of the cap than Crosby did on his second contract, and for 3 more years.
What a beauty this kid is.
Things will be pretty tight the first few years, but this contract will really pay big dividends towards the end of the term.

Well originally I said that the Oilers would want 11 McDavid would want 14 and they'd settle at 12.
the difference between 12.5 and 13.25 is next to nothing, now everything hinges on Draisatl.
Anything over 7.5 is bad for the Oilers.

$86M of the $100M contract is bonus. I'm not surprised at this in the least. Connor's camp hedging it's bets that there is a work stoppage in 2020 and ensuring their client continues to get paid.

when they trade him because he's tired of playing for what is basically an expansion team roster?

Except the cap won't rise as much as it did when Crosby signed. You won't get the big savings like you did at the end of the Crosby contract.

I hate the Oilers as much as any Flames fan, but any way you look at it this is a great signing. McDavid is worth every cent of whatever amount he signs for, and there isn't a team in the league who wouldn't have given him whatever it takes to sign.
The real test is what they do with the remainder of funds left under the salary cap after McDavid. That's where we'll really see what sort of GM they have. Can Chiapet get enough quality players with the money he has left, because any underperforming player contracts get magnified when every penny counts.
Pittsburgh seems to manage with 2 superstars in Crosby and Malkin, then getting good value out of the rest of the roster. Can Edmonton do similar with McJesus and Draisatl? Should be interesting to watch at least. I've no problem with McJesus, it's just the rest that's up for debate now.

Anyone think this signing bonus stuff will be addressed in the next CBA? Or can it? I could see Loophole Lou going all out with this in Toronto
