Default Internship

So my Son is in University and has to find an Internship for this summer. I didn't go to University and have no idea how this works. So CP help a Mom understand.

Is this possible in Calgary with the economic down turn?
Does he get paid or is it just for experience?
How do you go about finding companies looking for interns?

Two questions:
What's he taking? And is it through the co-op program?

What program is your son in?

I don’t think unpaid internships are really a think in Canada?

So just a whip through Indeed.ca searching for Internships.

https://www.indeed.ca/pagead/clk?mo=...jsa=5221&sal=0

Commercial banking internship

https://www.indeed.ca/company/Stratt...1a8f00fe&vjs=3

Internship with a apps development company

https://www.indeed.ca/rc/clk?jk=69c3...a327cfd7&vjs=3

Talent support internship

anyways there's about 5 pages of internships on Indeed when I used Internship and intern as a search criteria so they are there, and lots of different types.

He should be getting paid or at the very least credit for a class.

Unpaid internships are pure bogus.

I think many large organizations would have summer programs. They are a great talent tool.

For sure it should be paid. And while it won’t be C suite stuff just yet, it should be more than just filing and coffee.

Depending on what year he's in, most consulting firms (Deloitte, EY, PWC, KPMG, Accenture, etc.) have internship programs. They also tend to have significant presence on campus to help students be successful in their application process.

Looks like McKinsey is currently hiring for Business Analyst interns and BCG is looking for associates.

If he's at all interested in consulting, it can be an extremely rewarding albeit challenging career.

His first step should be to go to the Haskayne Career Centre and make an appointment with a career counselor to go through the process. Then, he should check out what jobs are posted on their website - it is a great resource, at least it was for me 15 years ago.

Thank you all so much. How hard is getting an Internship? Is it only for professions you want? How does it all work?

Most companies he would be looking at with that type of school should have some lower summer-student/entry level positions. Digging around online or just old fashioned showing up and asking wouldnt hurt.

I would also be as vocal about what he wants to do as possible in social situations. You never know who you're speaking with.

So these type of jobs are still happening in Calgary? Even with the downturn.

I wouldn't worry too much about the pay at this time in his life. I would be interested in getting the best combination of useful experience with in-demand skills and getting the right company name on his CV. Good experience and a good name on the CV is worth much more in the long run than whatever he would be getting paid as an intern.

There is actually a documentary called "The Internship" that you should check out, it might answer a lot of your questions. It follows these two ex-salesmen who have an internship at Google, and how they struggle to compete with a younger generation trying to get jobs there.

Yeah the pay won’t be much. Probably not much higher than minimum wage. But he should be getting paid something. No one should be working for free unless you’re interning at some small start up that you believe in.

Tough to say, but companies always need underlings, and it’s usually cheaper to mould a person like that into a future employee than to hire outsiders.

Also you said he might not come home, is he going to school elsewhere? Why not look there?

I thought the Documentary "The Intern" was good as well. When he got a boner getting a massage I laughed.
