Mikka's glory days
Great article by Cruickshank. I remember his first game, beat my Habs.
https://theathletic.com/653874/2018/...act-to-follow/
On Dec. 8, he was named the NHL’s defensive player of the week. His numbers were already sparkling – 6-1-0, 1.71, .928.
Amazing, especially when considering his gear.
Sure, thanks to Thorson, the trim was immaculate – but, as it turned out, the equipment wasn’t even his.
“You know how goaltenders are finicky? The name on the pads was not Kiprusoff, it was Nabokov,” recalled Marcoux. “I said, ‘What’s the deal here?’ And he says, ‘Well, Nabby didn’t like those, so I tried them out and I liked them. So I kept them.'”

I was driving back from Edmonton (my sister's wedding) the day of the Kipper trade. had 960 on the entire way home, it was a Sunday but they had several stories about the deal. not much was known about Kipper but Peter Maher kept reassuring us that Sutter told him he specifically targeted this player and that he was going to be something special
Kipper rang off a few early wins (Montreal and ?) then I went to the game against Colorado- I remember thinking the guy made me really nervous he looked a bit shaky. Flames lost that game in OT I think. that was the last time that year I felt that way about Kipper

Glad they included the puck handling piece in that article.
Can remember how good of a goalie he was, but how bad he was at handling the puck that first year. When he came back the next season, it was obvious he spent a lot of time perfecting that and was light years better.

I didn't fully appreciate how good his rebound control was or how good he could track the puck until he was gone and you watch other Flames goalies after him. The guy was just a rock back then in net. Nothing phased him. It's too bad we wasted his prime years with a mediocre team in front of him.

Still my favorite news article of all time on Kipper. Wish I could find the original article.

Miikka Kiprusoff for a second-round draft pick? Not THE Miikka Kiprusoff? With the 3.25 goals-against average? And a 5-14 record last year? That Miikka Kiprusoff? Apparently Darryl Sutter thinks he's a No. 1 NHL goalie. Oh.

God I miss Kipper. I knew the day would come where he'd no longer be in net and likely the Flames' would spend years looking for a new one. I always made sure I enjoyed every single moment of seeing him play. Never took a second for granted, knowing how good of a goalie he was.
The mysterious enigma that he is makes him even more awesome.

In fairness we were tortured for a long time prior to and post Mikka.
Mikka was like being given an exquisite gift and then having it yanked out from under you.
Existence is pain.

We as Flames fans were so spoiled. To be honest I don't think I've seen anyone in hockey today that to put a rebound exactly where he wants to like Kipper did. And the reaction saves he made. Holy moly. I bet he could play just as well in todays equipment simply because he's not a blocking goaltender. Still amazes me that he could get back across the crease the way he did.

When they perfect cloning, we need to start a CP gofundme to make an endless supply of Kippers

and who knew he had a brother who was drafted by the Canadiens? Marko didn't quite make the mark in the NHL his younger brother did.

Anxiously awaiting Kipper's return to Calgary so we can retire his number (no FAF please).
I believe he did a phone interview last year that suggested they were planning something for this year, but haven't heard anything since...

In 5 years most will have forgotten Jagr ever played for Calgary, if they haven't already.
What I always loved about Kipper was, when he was on, you could tell really early and you knew it was going to be a good game (particularly in the playoff run).

One of the best goaltenders ever IMO. We were lucky to have him and be able to watch him play. We will likely never have another goalie as good as he was.

Yeah, okay, Jagr was elite throughout his career, Kipper was elite when he played here.
Important distinction.

Kipper was amazing, the way he played was so special. After the SJ game i remembered a save where Kipper made a save off a deflection and went to bat the puck with the back of his stick. The puck went over the galss and he got a penalty for delay of game. It all happened so fast i didnt understand what happened lol. 2 mins for making a save.
