This isn't that straight forward

All re-usable bags should be polypropylene, which is created with a byproduct of oil refining.

Yup, they've already made them illegal for stores to use in Victoria and most of the Island is trying to transition away from them.

Take out boxes. Restaurants should charge extra for the boxes for take outs. If you bring your own containers, then you don't have to pay extra.
And how about paper towels for hand drying in the washrooms? I actually don't know how much money (and the environment) we save by using an electronic hand dryer instead...

Take out boxes would be a tricky one. You can't just have Joe rando showing up with tuperware that was sliding around his trunk then go into a kitchen. They have no way of ensuring they are clean and safe and wouldn't contaminate the food.

Was at a bar over the weekend and they served their drinks with a long piece of penne pasta. Seemed like a novel/compostable way to give someone a straw if they wanted one.

I re-use mine as garbage bags. Seems a lot less wasteful than actually using garbage bags. The plastic bags from grocery stores are made of a much lighter plastic material.
Theoretically the best solution would be to find a way to eliminate garbage bags. Currently, you aren't supposed to put loose garbage into bins, as it sprays everywhere when the garbage men empty it.

I got screwed on that in Vancouver. They used linguine for coffee stir sticks. You know what isn't cool? Not telling people that, when 1 in 125 are celiac. Very clever guys, you replaced plastic with making people sick.

Individual packaging for every single thing people buy. The amount of packaging for products is ridiculous. Things that do need a plastic container should be bulk fillable (laundry detergents, dish soap etc). I mentioned the new marijuana system before, but dear god what are we doing putting heavily consumed products in small plastic containers. It’s horrific to think we are banning straws while buying grams of weed with their own plastic containers.
Also, recycling is energy intensive. Don’t feel good about yourself because you used recycled packaging or compost all your food waste. Stop buying #### you don’t need.

With the blue bins and compost, our house has very limited garbage. We put out maybe one bag a week, and even that we're trying to minimize. Whereas if I got plastic grocery bags every time I went shopping, I'd have way too many of them to use for garbage.
I think getting rid of plastic garbage bags is a great first step. If people don't want to buy garbage bags at the store, then they should be trying to cut down on the amount of garbage they produce.
