Love it

I have my great granddad’s papers, he lasted under 200 days before he was sent home for gas wounds.

It really drives it home.

OMG. Her dumb family is partly to blame for the two world wars. I cant't wait for her to croak. But she probably gets daily injections of toddler blood and will live to 150.

He didn't get enough traction with his first troll so he's looping around for a second pass.

I’m a republican (not in the US party sense).

I don’t believe in a hereditary head of state or a foreigner as head of state.

But I respect those that do.

That comment was grossly offensive.

Hi. We haven't met in person.

Good News = Getting Drunk.

The only way we Cape Bretoners know how to pass along good news is hungover the next day, he says from his house where he watches the North Sydney to Newfoundland Ferry depart and arrive.

Can anyone confirm which episodes of the Dan Carlin podcast are good for WWI subject matter? Seems like there's a few and I'm not sure.

Countdown to Armageddon

It's like 5 or 6 parts, start with 1. The insanity of the assassination of Ferdinand is unbelievable.

This contributed to the North Sea naval arms race and other antagonistic policies which helped sway Britain into the war. WW2 - 1,100,000 Canadian served in WW2, Canada suffered 44,000 deaths in enemy actions. Canada's population 12,292,000 in 1946. 9% of Canadians served, .4% of Canada's population were killed.
To put those numbers into perspective with Canada's population today, there would have been 2.9 - 3.3 million people serving in the military and between 148 000 (WW2 rates) and 222 000 (WW1 rate) would have died in service.

Blueprint for Armageddon is the name of it actually.

It is a six part series and is approximately 24 hrs in total.

What I found is that most people have a basic understanding of the conflict ie geography and major players etc, so I found I wasn't super confused listening to it like I was with his other ancient history stories.

It dives deep into the history, and often uses quotes of ppl who were there and what there accounts of the events were eg) watching the German troops roll through Belgium in a 24hr continuous line of men or the gas attacks on the battlefields of Verdun.

Its informative, it is interesting and its heart wrenching to the point of tears at times. If you want to put WWI in perspective, this is about as good as it gets.

Cinematheque Calgary screened the original version of All Quiet on the Western Front at the new library. I had never seen to before. Wow. What a powerful movie.

For those who haven't seen it, you should. It's about a group of German soldiers in WWI. Their teacher convinces them to sign up for the glory of war and it doesn't turn out too well for them.

The film did such a good job of showing that war sucks for everyone involved and that the people in town who aren't fighting really don't appreciate it. Apparently, many of the extras were actual veterans of the war who volunteered to be in the movie after reading the hugely popular novel, in order to show a realistic depiction of the horror of war.
