They just have to "catch" Dustin Brown doing something and they'll be fine.

I can see the headline:

"Jaywalking is simply an unacceptable behavior from our players", says Dean Lombardi after putting Brown on unconditional waivers

If the Flames pick 5-7 would anyone be willing to pull a blockbuster with the islanders for their 1st, Strome, Hamonic? Obviously the Flames are adding big time to balance the deal out

You would lose someone good to the expansion draft, no point in giving up very good assets and then losing them for nothing. Also this does not solve the problem between the pipes.

Very fair points about the expansion draft. Stroke could fill a top 6 role with us and Hamonic gives the Flames the best top 4 by a wide margin but if those players could not be retained in an expansion draft then there is no point

Here's an idea if Flames land Hamonic or a similar top 4 guy.

Protect Brodie, Hamilton, Hamonic. Talk to Giordano and tell him they will not protect him but will put a deal in place where the expansion team will not select him. Basically have Gio in on the plan.

As good as Gio is, paying an aging dman close to 7 mill a year might not be as enticing for an expansion team. Especially if they can get an asset by not selecting him.

Also him leaving exposed will go big towards the 25% salary being exposed. Yet not losing him.

Gio 1000% would get picked up I an expansion draft. Why lose that incredible asset for free? Gio continues to have career year after career year and is praised by the young stars of the team as in incredible leader.

Like I said, have a deal in place so the expansion doesn't pick him.

So if you're the expansion team, what does it take to agree to not pick him?

Does a 2nd round pick do it?

If I am the GM, I am looking at the Flames' roster and asking myself: if I don't pick Giordano, who do I pick?

If the next best asset on the list is Stajan, then no, I am taking Giordano.

Would I pass on Giordano for say, Kylington and a 2nd? Maybe.

Backlund and a 2nd? Probably.

Regardless, that would be an expensive expansion draft for the Flames.

That's supposing that such deals are even permitted this time around. We don't know yet if they will be.

Saw this proposal on HF boards
Our first (5-7)
Wideman
Second
for
Mason
Brayden Shenn

Gives us a legit #1 goalie and a very versatile 2-way forward who can play every position.

Did a Philly fan propose this?

Well...yeah. 61, 51 and 54 starts in his last 3 seasons, relatively decent sv% on an average Philly team with suspect defending/defencemen infront of him.

I'd say that makes him a legit #1 goalie.

He had a few rough years in CLB but since going to Philly his numbers would suggest that he is indeed a legit starting goalie.

He may be a #1 goalie, but he's probably one of the very last I'd want to spend any assets to acquire to begin with... let alone in that disaster of a trade.

Yeah, not advocating that proposal in any way. Just saying he's a legit starter IMO.

I've always thought Mason was an interesting option, but why has he been so mediocre his entire career?

Eye-balling the numbers, he appears to be a career .916 save percentage. I feel save percentage is a less subjective stat than GAA, but that's me.

Not bad numbers, so why has he always just been mediocre or Vanilla, if you will.

Well, the guy only has 12 playoff games in 11 years since turning pro.

So he has never carried a team to the playoffs, let alone IN the playoffs.

One could argue his time in CBJ was not so good because of the team in front of him but there's no excuse for him in Philly.

He's not a winner. He's not worth assets.

We need to find a gem like Jones.

Not a Reimer who is Mason 2.0.

A kid who is NHL ready and has been learning from someone who is a proven winner, and has shown the protege how to conduct himself.

Could be Raanta but that depends on Hank. If Lundquist only has a year or 2 in the tank, then Raanta may see a great opportunity in NY and may not leave.

Bishop or Vasilevsky, Vasilevsky preferred.

Murray, maybe. Not proven, won't be getting a chance to show what he is at this level for a while in Pitts. High risk, high reward.

Andersson out of Anaheim.. Has had moderate success with a top 5 team over years..
