I am a bit intrigued to see how Bennett and Monahan would do as the pair on the second line.

I really think there is still a chance Bennett can put it all together and become a top 6 player but I dont like him on RW.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Bennett-Monahan-??????
Mangiapane-Backlund-Dube
Jankowski-Ryan-Neal

I would love it if they tried him at C one last time to see if it could work out. If he had Lindholm as a backup on his line it could be alright

Gaudreau-Monahan-??????
Tkachuk-Bennett-Lindholm
Mangiapane-Backlund-Dube
Jankowski-Ryan-Neal

Probably wont happen but IMO we have 4 legitimate top 6 forwards and Backlund who is right up there but would probably be best as a 3rd line defensive specialist. We also have Bennett who should be a top 6 and maybe deserves a legitimate shot at taking one - and not as a RWer.

Kadri would have been perfect.

Bennett had a good playoffs on the wing. Let's keep his confidence up and not saddle him with the extra responsibilities of centre (maybe if he keeps it up though.)

I have always wanted to see a Tkachuk-Lindholm-Bennett line, but Lindy was just too good on the top line last season. If there is a way we could score a legit top line RW threat like lindholm provided last season that would be great.

I was more just making the point that it's not really an overpay - it's just what you'd expect to pay for a 19 year old 4th overall pick that had a great rookie season.

You’d pay a lot more than that.

If he was a RFA, the offer sheet would cost you 4 1st round picks.

But he’s cheap for two more years.

Not saying that your suggestion is bad, but boy that’s an expensive 4th line.

In my opinion, the flames have 2 great play makers in Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Ideally, we split them up.

What about trying this early on:

Gaudreau - lindholm - Neal
Tkachuk - Monahan - Bennett

Ok I choose neither then, lol

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Bennett
Tkachuk - Monahan - Dube
Jankowski - Backlund - Neal
Mangiapane - Ryan - Czarnik ---> this line is way too small

Gaudreau - Lindholm-Neal/Jankowski
I thought last season Neal didn’t look completely useless when paired with Gaudreau and Lindholm. A lot of it depends on what shape he comes into camp with. Another option I would like to see given a try is Jankowski. I was hoping maybe with Gaudreau and Lindholm he could bring some of the offence he’s shown on the PK(during transition).

Mangiapane - Monahan- Bennett
Here I am really hoping that Mangiapane takes a step as a playmaker. Also, I want Monahan, Tkachuk, and Neal all on different lines. Bennett is mostly here to create havoc in the offensive zone. I could see Ryan working on the right side as well though.

Tkachuk- Backlund - Neal/Jankowski
Tkachuk and Backlund work well together, and they can carry a player defensively. I also really don’t want to see Neal and Jankowski on the same line.

Dube - Ryan - Czarnik/Quine
Gives a very speedy yet small line that could pitch in.

I think Mangiapane puts up 30-40 points next season.

Found his stride in the spring, was on pace for 25-30 with notable uptick in production towards the end of the season.

If we don't land a top 6 going into the fall, could see him be a guy that moves up the lineup and maybe surpasses Frolik as that stopgap middle six winger for the second line. Which would be weird cause it seems like Frolik when not paired with Backlund feels out of place on this roster.

I'm in favor of exploring this type of thing. I've posted this before, but IMO Gaudreau and Monahan as a pair are absolutely incredible at putting up points off of turnovers, defensive miscues, or other (relatively) unforced errors, but compared to other similarly good players they aren't as good at generating a goal against a stout defense in a tight-checking game. By shuffling the lines, we likely hurt our ability to score 7+ goals against a non-playoff team in February (so it probably drops our overall goal totals), but if we can find more ability to score a 3rd period goal against Bergeron and Chara in a 1-1 tie I think it'll be more than worth it.

Now, the big question is if Gaudreau-Monahan can develop more of that skillset, or if we're more likely to find it with different combos. And that depends on why they aren't scoring those goals - is it due to inherent flaws they have as players, or something that can be coached out of them?

Great post.

We can all certainly read too much into comments, but the Monahan interview with Steinberg at the NHL Awards was pretty interesting. To paraphrase he was already working on speed/explosiveness and then he said something that I've discussed with friends ever since. "I need to be a completely different player next season".

What is that?

I'm guessing they want him to use his size more. I don't think you can expect him to turn into a greasy player over night, but maybe get into the difficult areas and stand your ground.

Could speak to less perimeter and turnover conversion and more fight for the tough areas and score his patented garbage through some physical battles.

I hadn't heard this at all. It is music to my ears!

I think the number 1 way the Flames can realistically improve is Tkachuk and Monahan becoming faster and more explosive. Neither are great skaters, but if they can take it up a notch, I think that would help so much.

I disagree that the biggest problem against Colorado was a lack of physicality, although the Flames definitely made it too easy on the Avs' defencemen. I think it was a lack of speed. The forwards couldn't keep up with Mackinnon et al. and this meant the defencemen had to back off and allow the Avs easy entry into the offensive zone.

If Tkachuk and Monahan can get faster, that would make a world of difference. Don't get me wrong, I love both players, but I think its okay for us to admit that neither are burners and it would help if they got faster.

You can always be faster for sure.

But I was just speaking to Monahan becoming "a different player". Has to be off the perimeter and into the muck more doesn't it?

To be honest I think the Colorado series was mostly between the ears. They got burned by McKinnon, the dmen starting backing in too much and the team lost their gap for transition.

I actually think Monahan does a fairly good job of getting into the muck. He scores a lot of goals from the hard areas to get to, but perhaps that's just me.

That's completely possible. I think the problems with the gap and the defencemen backing off had to do with team speed, but its also a good explanation that it was between the ears. Perhaps it was both. Maybe they got a little shocked by how fast the Avs were moving the puck through the neutral zone (both because of fast skating and puck movement) and then mentally went away from their forecheck and tight gaps in the neutral zone.

I don't know.

Either way, it is music to my ears that Monahan is working on speed and explosiveness, and I hope that Tkachuk is doing the exact same thing.

On the rush for sure, but when the other team gets set up it's perimeter and one on one attempts from Gaudreau for that line.

I don't dislike the line in a vacuum but we can't have Gaudreau playing on the shutdown line with Backlund. So unless we're acquiring another centre to supplant Backlund it ain't gonna work.
