He won't be back until 2018 when he posts to announce that the next remote will talk back to you. It will tell you the local temperature, the current time or your monthly bill amount.

The platform is a huge step forward in terms of technology. Freerange apps were the first implementation.

That being said, Shaw is implementing it so...

I am excited about the technology, not about the implementation.

Hello,

First off, i am not a shaw employee. I do have friends that work for shaw and gain inside knowledge sometimes. My first post years ago on this forums was a survey created about the gateway product which was shared with Shaw. Gateway was launched with many issues, and I and others were displeased with the initial launch of it and how buggy the system was. My intentions with this post was to share the news, which people would have organically found out anyway. It's all over the Internet and social media. I am intrigued by the X1 platform, and looks like Rogers is also dumping their IPTV plans to go with X1 too. If two large companies in Canada are going with this product, there must be something good about it. I will sign up if the pricing becomes better, but for now it's outside our families budget.

Have a great day,

My Sony TV uses Android; the secondary remote control uses voice and the recognition quality is very high.

Everyone uses that when they are searching youtube for video because typing stuff just takes too long.

Having said that, using voice recognition on Kinect/Xbox One or using the above remote control to change channels is never used in my house because it is easier to punch 3 channel numbers on the remote, or to one touch a guide and then scroll through either the pvr or live broadcasts...and then enter to watch.

I don't see the advantage of voice control to change channels.

Just had Shaw here to install the new Bluesky (my wife works at Shaw) Its pretty cool. The guide works well and its fast, all new channel numbers though. Channels are grouped by genre; local, sports, movies etc. Its way more thanjust anew voice remote. Going to spend some time playing with it, see what/if I can break it, and try out some stuff. Will report back.

Who is everyone? My experience with voice recognition is that there is almost no way it could possibly be faster than manual entry. Not when you take into account the "go back and correct mistakes" factor.

Or when it gives you results that you weren't looking for because it completely misheard you.

Hopefully they have some "deal" to let existing subscribers. I bought new DVR's in the last few years and there's no way I'm shelling out more for a hardware upgrade.

Green Text?

If you want a deal you have to do the following. Cancel Shaw and sign up Telus, buy new hardware. Quit Telus after contract is up and join Shaw. You'll get a steal of a deal.

Loyalty means nothing in cable and cell phones. My parents have been on Shaw since the 80's and they won't do squat for them. Even matching a new customer deal.

You can just cancel shaw and have your significant other sign up for promo right away. Or cancel shaw and wait 30 days and sign up again. No need to get tied into telus!

Sorry, I shouldn't have inserted a new line between sentences. everyone in my house (including guests) uses the speech recognition built into my secondary sony tv remote control to search youtube on the sony tv because it is infinitely faster than typing using the standard remote control.

the reason that I posted on this thread in particular is because I am constantly impressed at how good it is. siri for example is nowhere close to the accuracy from this sony remote control. I did also mention that the Kinect or other devices don't work as well as this sony remote.

I don't disagree that voice recognition seems over-rated in its current state; siri in particular seems to be getting much, much worse as time goes on.

voice recognition, when it works, is much faster than typing on non alpha keyboards.

Gotcha, I wasn't following the train of thought, I could definitely see that voice recognition could be better than typing out something using an onscreen keyboard and directional arrows on a remote. I was totally thinking of my own experience with siri on iPhone.

In shaw's or GWsurvey's defence, there's seems to be a lot of telus employee's on here too. It's the same ones the are quick to respond to any new shaw thread or product. Maybe they should also come forward.

This is all people want these days. Glad to see Bell is finally doing it, even if it's just a add-on for their regular hardware for now. Guessing they launch streaming based service by the end of the year for AppleTV.

Yes, the only thing people watch live now, really, is new and sports.

Nice to see a TV provider trying to adapt... it's frustrating to be willing to give telcom's your money and have them be unable/unwilling to modernize.

It will probably count against the data cap is the only downside, but otherwise it is exactly what I would want from Telus.

Got my BlueSky installed last night.

Digging all of the features/menu system. The voice recognition is actually pretty stellar out of the box.

Was a few hiccups in the install, but all said and done it's nice to replace the old boxes I've had forever. Getting a bit of a bump to my internet was nice as well (runs 176 down/16 up now). Saving a couple bucks a month and getting more channels is just icing.
