The VR really helps, especially when you're zoomed in quite a bit. The slightest movement ruins the picture. Even with VR, sometimes my photos still end up blurry. I can't imagine what they would look like without it.
Anyway, as I promised, here are some photos taken with the 55-200mm VR lens as well as my Sigma wide angle lens. There's quite a few so I'll just link them if that's ok.
Firstly, the 55-200mm lens:
The Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road in Australia
A koala sitting about 10m in front of me
Same koala, zoomed in some more
Here's the wide angle lens shots:
Seahorse Island along the Great Ocean Road
Sunset at Byron Bay, Australia
Julian Rocks at Byron Bay
Queenstown, New Zealand
Mountains at Queenstown, New Zealand
More mountains around Queenstown
To show how the wide angle lens works close-up,
here's a shot of a lorikeet.
I ended up using the wide-angle lens about 95% of the time while I was there. The 55-200mm lens was great when I was out looking for animals. I was able to get shots of koalas way up in the trees and a few great shots of birds at a sanctuary I went to, but outside of that the lens didn't really give me the depth I wanted.
