Stone is interchangeable with Hamonic to me, buying him out in the first place was dumb. Should have moved Hamonic for picks/never even traded for him in the first place.

Good to have Stone back, hopefully he’s put in the work this off season that a player who’s on their way out of the league should have put in.

Very unusual. I wonder how the NHL will look at this move and the rest of the league? Definitely a move that challenges the essence or purpose of the buyout.

Seems like a loophole used strategically.

Hardly. We lost Valimaki long-term between the time we bought Stone out and re-signed him. Circumstances changed.

Wait... Stone is 'a player who's on their way out of the league', and 'Stone is interchangeable with Hamonic'?

So Hamonic is a replacement-level player in your eyes? IMO, that isn't anywhere close to being accurate. Hamonic is a couple levels (at least) above Stone. Hamonic is a legit #4 - on any team. Stone is a #6 or #7 at this point.

That is one great point. So a legitimate reason. But you can't disagree the intended purpose of a buyout could be used as a loophole going forward?

Player gets paid.

Team gets penalized.

No stakeholders should have any concern.

When the player and the team are complicit, which I'm not implying in this case at all, you have a loophole creating an unfair advantage.

I don't think this is the case here. I also don't think it's the intent of the buyout clause for a player to resign with the buyout team.

The buyout is ancient history. They signed a defenseman for league minimum and from that perspective, it is a low risk move. Of course there is always risk in deciding which players you will sign, and whether you chose the best option.

He admitted on 960 right now that he was not playing well before being injured and obviously there's a reason he wasn't getting much interest but he's also a Calgary boy who is happy to stay here.

I wish him well and it's not like I know enough about other depth defensemen available to really have an opinion on how good a signing this is. The price is right.

This is my bet too. I'm sure Tippett and Smitty have already reached out and attempted to convert him over as soon as the buyout happened.

Yeah, offering Stone the options to
A)
- play under Gully
- with McJesus and Neal committee to a full year of providing no backchecking pressure
- backstopped by Smith who pretty much the worst goalie in the NHL last regular season
- live (if you call it that) in Edmonton

Or
B) go back to the team that threw you in the trash.

Obviously it’s gotta be B)

Stone contemplating where to sign...

Stone: Calgary offering me $700k and Edmonton offering significantly more, where should I sign, dear.

Mrs Stone: We are not moving to Edmonton!

Stone: Oh, okay.

Not such short times between letting them go and getting them back, but Conroy, Cammalleri, and Tanguay all came back for seconds.
