Stone's metrics have never been stellar, but when you look at scoring chance rates against or expected goal rates against he always seems to move right back to the pack when it comes to other Calgary defensemen.

He's like a big, cheap Kris Russell in a lot of ways.

I just hope the guy can be the 17-18 Stone and not the guy we saw at the end of last season after the blood clot.

Why not just sign him to a PTO and see if there's anything left in the tank?

Bye Michael.

Welcome back Michael.

But actually, I think he didn't have a chance to prove his value due to the blood clot. Now ge finally can with Valkmaki sidelined. Spot is his to lose, and hes likely a better fit than the alternatives, even though I think Kylington could handle it well.

I wondered this too. But I believe Treliving genuinely likes Stone and wants him to have a contract. He is just about keeping him whole and in the worst case paying a lot for an AHLer which is really only a problem to the owners.

Certainly can disagree with this approach, but the Calgary Flames have been very good to Michael Stone.

Presumably because Stone had other offers on the table that were more appealing than a PTO with Calgary.

The last season of Stone's three-year, $10.5 million contract was bought out on Aug. 1st. Despite that, he signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with Calgary on Sept. 11th. Stone was only able to play in 14 matches last season, so he knew there was a chance that a buyout was coming. Ultimately he's happy to be able to stay put and get a chance to bounce back with his old team. "You’re not really sure where you were going to be living come training camp," Stone said. "To not have to pack up the family and go somewhere… I’m happy to be staying. I still believe in this team, I still think we can do some good things and I am excited to be a part of that."

Treliving is having quite the offseason. But it's okay...he's in on everything!

His price could also go up a bit if he plays well, and his suitors could increase if players get injured in camp.

Brodie would be traded for value, but that doesn’t have to mean a good current NHL player.

Really? From my vantage point, it's like Treliving found a legal way to restructure the contract. They get to keep Stone around (which they clearly always wanted to do) and at a $1.63 million discount.

This is actually my post to which you have responded (I am not sure what happened, here.

In principle, I agree, but I don't think this is practically realistic. Brodie carries high enough of a cap hit that a team who acquires him will most likely also need to move salary to fit him in. He is one year from impending free agency, so anyone who adds him this year probably views him as a key piece to winning now.

Like I mentioned above, we already see the building blocks in place on the sort of deal that Treliving wants to make for Brodie, and that deal is a hockey trade—one which does not provide much of any cap relief.

The Flames are saving $2.4 m on the cap from his buyout. Forget that the player they just signed is named Michael Stone, because that is fairly irrelevant to the question of cost. Before yesterday they had only six defensemen on the roster, so they were always going to add another one. Adding one at the League minimum—which is what Stone signed for—is actually the best outcome.

True enough (I also don’t know what happened). But of course, trading for a somewhat useful player who gets paid less, plus perhaps a pick, might do the trick. The Flames don’t need $5M in relief, they can accomplish a fair bit with $2M net savings.

The guy is probably the most underpaid defenseman in the game last year, and a huge reason the second pair quieted down making the team a contender.
Wow Hamonic is a stud.

15th in ex Girlfriend % and 13th in Stanley Cup Finals % is good enough for me!

Looking at Cap Friendly, there is now just over 7 million to get Tkachuk and Mangiapane signed...let alone any of the PTOs. How is this supposed to work?
