Default Jets 2 Flames 1 (OT)

Jets 2 Flames 1 (OT)

- Flames get caught trying to sit on a 1-0 lead
- David Rittich solid in the nets
- Derek Ryan messes up in overtime
- New lines have good moments
- Fun out door game!

Hard to really like the way the flames are playing so far this year, but the last couple games suggest they might finally be trending in the right direction.

Starting to finally see green shoots in the sense that a lot of forwards are starting to put together consistent efforts simultaneously. No one is in high gear yet (except maybe Gio) and the team game isn't there, but at least the players have finally taken the first step of having a consistent efforts when playing their individual game.

Things are looking up.

I missed the first period. Thought the game was entertaining, Regina is lucky to have such a nice stadium.

Mixing up the lines is always a fun experiment, however I felt it further highlighted the lack of RWs on the Flames.

Still shocked that Chucky's high stick wasn't blown dead and then more shocked it wasn't overturned. One of the 'clues' officials are taught to look for is, is the stick past horizontal? If yes, it's a pretty good indicator of a high stick. Think Brett Hull's goal in the 1996 World Cup.

Lots of focus on Ryan's play on the OT goal, not a lot on Tkachuk, he didn't make the best defensive decision after a lost face-off 3 on 3. Brodie has to not let that pass get through cleanly either.

It's always more than one mistake that leads to a goal in hockey, for sure.

But Ryan knows he has better jets than Tkachuk, and for whatever reason he reacted really late to that backcheck. You can't do that in 3 on 3 hockey.

It was clear in the replay that Tkachuk was reaching and hunched over when he went for the 'high stick'. It was below his normal shoulder height, and the on ice call was correct.

Also, Ryan has probably never played 3 on 3 before, and played it as he would 5 on 5. Bad adjustment by Ryan for sure, but he probably should not have been out there.

Coaching minor hockey when you get Esso Minor Hockey Week and the overtime rules you look at your roster and you decide what players can play three on three hockey and you build a roster for those situations.

It's not a slight on players that don't. They're good positionally, they know their roles, but they struggle a bit in the read and react world of three on three that is more about where you are on the ice in relation to the opposition then where you're supposed to be because that's your position.

Maybe Ryan isn't one of those guys.

Why was Ryan out there in OT?

I actually feel bad for Ryan because Peters did not do him any service with putting him out there with Tkachuk who is not great at 3 on 3 and never plays with Ryan, let alone in 3 on 3. That was a GG esque move by Peters and he got punished for it. I don’t blame Ryan at all, he’s not supposed to be out there 3 on 3 and definitely not with a player he never plays with. Just a careless lineup decision imo

Was keeping Jankowski out of the line-up in the Hertiage classic directed punishment?

He has been a fixture in the line-up and his first 11 games have not been at the NHL level.

How bad was the Flames effort? The shut down pair for the Jets was Morrissey and a banged up Tucker Poolman.

Having Poolman on the ice should be considered a huge advantage that the Flames would in normal game (say last year) consider sneaking Gaudreau's line out there to take advantage...... AND the Jets were doing this on purpose.

On paper Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk should have 3 goals each playing against Poolman.

I don’t recall ever seeing Ryan in 3-3 OT.

What a dumb move.

I think he was on in the last game. He’s a good puck handler and a decent skater, and I think Peters likes that in OT.

ETA: more time than Monahan in that game which is likely only possible with some OT time.

He has not shown that this year.

Probably a slow starter like Iggy

I think Ryan is a slow starter like Ryan was last year.

I always go back to this analysis by SI that found that winning faceoffs doesn't really correlate with winning games.

How do face-offs impact long-term performance?

The answer to the first question seems to be rather unanimous, and for good reason. Nothing has indicated there is any meaningful statistical correlation in large sample sizes between winnings face-offs, and winning hockey games.

Ryan played 3-vs-3 with Chuckie against the panthers or LAK I think

I remember this because I was like "lol wtf is Ryan doing out there in OT?" to the guy sitting next to me
