Kind of obvious in this situation, but FWIW:
Aivis Kalniņš @A_Kalnins
Don't expect an AHL out-clause to be part of the contract.

Gillies will next year be on a one way contract and does not look like an NHLer. I have to imagine we trade him because we won't want to pay him NHL dollars to play in the minors. Although I suppose the counterpoint to that is Lazar this year.

Nice to statement to snag a Russian player - Flames really are looking everywhere, and are a legitimately attractive destination.
As for Gillies, I wouldn't cross him off the list yet. I have never been a huge fan of his game, even when I saw him playing in Providence. However, he has been better of late this season, and he looked decent in the NHL for his experience level last year. You never know with goalies. Look at how Mason has turned his career around this past season in the ECHL.
At any rate, Parsons is still the guy I am hopeful about long-term organizationally. Nice to add to that. As much as I love Parsons, you can't count on him either. You keep trying to find guys until someone breaks through.

Jack Campbell weighs 30 lbs less than Jon Gillies. If Jon were to come into camp 20 lbs lighter, I might be curious to see how he does.
As of now, Gillies is a big slow goalie with one hip surgery under his belt already. Goalies really shouldn't be that heavy. Tall, yes. Heavy? Nah.
Every team in the league has a Jon Gillies, and we should not be concerned with him haunting us.

Aivis Kalniņš @A_Kalnins
This fellow is very good at hockey. But on a more serious note - pretty athletic for his size. Overall calm goalie. I would call him a great project. Not sure if he has the ceiling to be an NHL starter but if developed properly he should be an amazing 1A/1B option.

I would not be overly shocked if the Flames included Gillies in a trade. One idea Dan and I were spitballing on our last episode was revisiting the Zucker trade but expanding it to include Dubnyk.
Something along the lines of a Frolik + Brodie + Gillies for Zucker and Dubnyk trade give or take.
I think getting this new goalie helps if the Flames decide to go that kind of route and move a goalie prospect in a deal like that.

Was hoping the Flames would so something like this again. Need more options for Stockton. I don't put much stock into goalie AHL numbers personally, but that said it is still disappointing that neither Parsons or Gillies have made a statement down there yet

Looks from his stats like he might have took over the starter role in the playoffs. Zero risk signing and good stats his whole career. Hoping he has a Rittich-like progression

Yeah, absolutely. Low Risk/High Reward. Picking up guys that can play for low-dollars and no assets.
Treliving just continuing to channel his inner Wizard.

Powerplay Quarterback

Pretty much puts a nail in the coffin of Gilles time with the team.
Not a chance he is signing here to play in the ECHL, so most likely him and Parsons or Macdonald in the A.

I don't know anything about him, but its good to see Treliving trying to always fill the prospect cupboards with such signings.

This must be the end of Gillies as a Flame, unless they plan on using one of the two as the NHL backup next season.
