Here is a quick update on the Mavericks since my last post:

-Last Saturday they came back for a win against the Allen Americans 6-1. Tyler Parsons was in net and made 27 saves. Jared VanWormer was awarded the first star of the game. 6 goals came from 2 from Shawn Pauly and 1 from Jared VanWormer, Brogan O'Brien, Alex Brooks, Matt Robertson.

-On Wednesday they lost 2-1 in overtime against the Fort Wayne Comets. Parsons again in net with 32 saves. Alex Brooks got the lone tally for the Mavericks.

-Last night they lost 6-3 against the Indy Fuel. Parsons making 32 saves and Jared VanWormer scoring 2 power play goals for the Mavericks. Matt Robertson got the 3rd tally for the Mavs.

They currently sit 5th in the Central Division with 71 points. The next closest team is the Kalamazoo Wings with 74 points. Tulsa and Toledo have already clinched the first two spots in the Division leaving the Mavericks fighting for that 4th spot. They will play a make up game on Monday then play again on Tuesday. There are 4 games remaining in the season.

The Mavs play their make-up game tonight against the Tulsa Oilers. They lose their tie for 5th in the Central division as the Indy Fuel picks up 2 points. A win tonight is imperative.

Mason McDonald gets the start in net. Matt Robertson gets on the board first for the Mavs with a feed from VanWormer just over 5 minutes into the game. Just under 12 minutes into the game Matt Robertson gets his 2nd goal off a sharp angle shot that flips over the shoulder of the goalie. Just seconds later the Mavs find the back of the net again but it is waved off for goalie interference against Danny Smith. They kill the power play only allowing 1 shot against. They get their first power play of the night and 32 seconds into it they get another one giving them a 5-on-3 situation that they take full advantage of. Jared VanWormer puts the Mavs up 3-0. This is his 14th ppg of the season and puts him leading the league in power play goals.

Tulsa makes the decision to switch up goalies to start the 2nd period. The Mavs get an early power play and do not generate much offense on it. Shawn Pauly rings a shot off the crossbar that lands in the paint but not quite over the line. That close to a 4-0 game for the Mavs. Mark Cooper follows up with goal #4 from Jared VanWormer. Coincidental minors get dealt after Tulsa gets heated in their deficit. Both penalties expire with minimal damage done by each team. Mark Cooper makes his way around a couple defenseman on a 2 on 1 rush and sneaks one past the Oiler goalie for the 5th lamplighter of the night. Tulsa finally gets one of their own at 12.5 minutes into the 2nd. Mavs carry on with a 5-1 lead. A seemingly easy rush beats McDonald with the Oiler player flips the puck over his glove side. Mavs still lead 5-2 in the last minute of the 2nd. Shots finish at 21-14 through 40 minutes.

Mark Cooper takes a tripping penalty 3 minutes into the 3rd. Tulsa gets their third unanswered goal just under halfway through the 3rd as a shot beat Mason McDonald top shelf on his glove side. 3 goals for the Oilers in 17 shots. Matt Robertson gets a hat trick 10:32 into the 3rd period and the Mavericks get back in control with a 6-3 lead. Tulsa pulls their goal for a 6-on-4 during a Mavericks penalty and do not change the score. Mavs win 6-3 outshooting the Oilers 24-23.

Hunter Smith has been out since Christmas with a broken thumb. The initial report was 6 weeks but he hasn't touched the ice since. Hard to say if it is maintenance based or if they just shut him down for the season.

The Mavericks finished their season last night and will not be continuing into the playoffs. After their loss to Indy on Tuesday, their fate was practically sealed. They finish 6th in the Central Division with 74 points.

Last 3 Game Scores:

April 3 vs. Indy Fuel: 4-1 Loss (Mason McDonald, 29 Saves)
April 6 vs. Utah Grizzlies: 6-5 Overtime Loss (Tyler Parsons, 32 Saves)
April 7 vs. Utah Grizzlies: 2-0 Loss (Mason McDonald, 26 Saves)

Defenseman Bryce Aneloksi also announced his retirement. He finished the year with 70 games played, 5 Goals and 32 Assists for a total of 37 points. The 27-year-old will be missed along with his rocket of a slap shot.

I am looking forward to your posts next season. They are always a great source of info on the Kansas City Mavericks there should be a couple of Flames goaltending prospects on that team next year. Hopefully McDonald and Schneider can improve their skills. Not sure who else will be in Kansas City is it a maximum of nine players Calgary can assign to them?. I doubt it will be close to the maximum but perhaps another two players in addition to the goalies.

Cliff Watson was a try out at Flames training camp in 2017 and played 1 game for Stockton last season. Could be some NHL interest there.

Last year's captain, Tyler Elbrecht has been picked up by division rival the Wichita Thunder. The C is open for this season and if I had to choose from the current roster list I would be thinking Carzo, VanWormer or Freschi.
