Or realize that if anyone wants this information about you, it already exists in many formats that no one freaks out about.

Oh, I didn't realize you had these displayed while you were playing your Xbox, using your cell phone or anywhere near a computer with a webcam.

My mistake, I thought I was dealing with someone who wasn't planning on taking their canoe onto the Bow this past weekend.

Last I checked, my reaction to a mountain dew commercial isn't available anywhere, in any format.

e: Gadzooks, I've been nenshi-nouned. Hmmm, i don't recall personally insulting you.

My mistake, you mentioned your credit card number and I was supposed to know you were talking about a Mt Dew commercial.

I guess I can stop posting, because you seem like you are having a completely different conversation in your head than the one we are seeing.

It might be. Have you watched anything on YouTube? Viewer metrics are stored, including whether or not you liked it, viewed related videos (shown alongside the page or after the video is done) or when you stop watching it (ie: pause it, navigate away, or close the window). They're used to direct not only other videos you might be interested in, but also target you with related advertising. Other websites do similar things (though obviously on a less sophisticated level).

Also, any time you do a search on Google, the links you click are not direct links.

Observe, if you were to Google 'Catfish', you might get "Catfish Movie Official Site - iamROGUE.com" as your first result. Hover over the link, and you get "http://www.iamrogue.com/catfish‎". But actually clicking on it sends you to "http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&cad =rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iamrogue.c om%2Fcatfish&ei=stLLUcOREZCUjAKo3oHICg&usg=AFQjCNH 3OkLRGpNKL78yzxcybauY3SZPBA&sig2=B-0PUiNS31sm94XICn8XxQ&bvm=bv.48572450,d.cGE".

Your actions and reactions to content are gathered, analysed, and responded to dynamically during your day-to-day web browsing. If you think otherwise, you're kidding yourself.

The obvious solution is to only use the internet behind 9 proxies.

I TOR to get to my VPN, then use a series of proxies to get my Internet, all by routing through a Starbucks Wifi.

I just route my internet through Rathji's house and get all the above benefits.

I only get 12.6KB down and 1.2KB up, but my personal security is worth it!

The point I was trying to make was that personal info exists in varying degrees and one should protect themselves as much as they can, rather than just give up (some would react to the credit card and social security number comment as a facetious joke, others, unbridled hostility).

I can accept this, as I can control every bit of data I place about myself online and I do appreciate how it can streamline my online activities. However, I would rank placing a potential spy camera in my living room as a level of intrusiveness that I could never be comfortable with and there is nothing Microsoft could say to convince me otherwise.

table-breaking pic

But you are comfortable with trusting Google, Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony, etc? All of those corporations sell devices that include a camera and a microphone and are always connected to the Internet. I would also suggest that those devices are used during "confidential" time way more than the Xbox One would be. Could you imagine if Apple started recording Facetime sessions?

It's funny, because one could argue that Microsoft has done more to protect consumer privacy than any of those companies.

I can't help but wonder if it's just a perception thing that's prevent psicodude and those who are on his side of thinking from seeing our perspective on the otherside. Facetime and other things with microphones and webcams that connect to the net are all under our control at all times. We know when we're sending data and when it's on. The kinect is always on and presumably connected to the internet. It's always trained on you and your entire living room/family room. It's really creepy and unsettling... based in real fears or not.

Oh you do, hey? You know at all times?

Try this little experiment. Turn on your cell phone camera, then block the screen so all you can see is the camera itself. Now do something that would deactivate the camera, like going to the home screen or switching to another app. Do you see any indication that the camera has turned off? Was there ever an indication that it was on? What about the mic?

You have no clue. You can only trust that the technology is working the way you expect it to.

The Kinect has an off setting (it must, both for privacy issues and due to it being sold in places that require devices that are powered off to draw no electricity). If you're seemingly so eager to be critical of one piece of equipment for these imagined privacy risks, why aren't you critical of the others that do the same thing? And hell, last I checked, neither the Kinect nor the Xbox One it was connected to has GPS / A-GPS built into it.

That is idiotic, seriously this is the whole friggin' point. Your argument is completely ridiculous and irrational when you refuse to see how they EASILY extrapolate to other devices. The fact that you don't walk around with tape on your cellphone camera lenses leads me to believe you either - in your heart of hearts - don't believe your own rubbish, or simply haven't bothered to think about it.

It's pretty easy to tell when your blocked screen phone is sending data, super easy if you have it set to wifi.

An Xbox One connected to wifi or Ethernet would be super easy to see when it is sending data, where it's sending that data to, and in some cases (depending on encryption) what that data is.

It wouldn't be able to hide the fact it is phoning home.
