Default Getting Internet....

OK, I live in Chesterfield Inlet during the year where the only internet available is satellite internet...it is $60/month and I only get 2GB of upload/download/month. Internet speed is slightly better than dialup.

I almost lost my mind last year.

My question is this:

Is there anything I can do to get some other kind of internet up there...via blackberry or something?

Thanks.

Have you tried looking at what Platinum Communications has to offer?

I don't know if they're in your area....but if you can, go for it. Its not cable, but they have decent speeds, good uptime, and good service.

According to their website, it isn't offered there.

I looked at satellite internet for the cabin a while ago, and I seem to recall $60 getting me 1 mbps speed. Don't have the links handy, but services are out there.

I can live with that speed, it's the 2GB download/upload max ratio that kills me! Hell I download a few songs and my monthly limit is done.

Ok, found one that offers 512 kbps service with no bandwidth limits for $60
http://www.netkaster.ca/packages.htm

Not sure if they are any good or not.

Also keep in mind what you are looking for. Bandwidth, speed, and low price; usually you can find 2 of those, but not all 3.

On the netkaster website it says the following:

"All equipment packages include the 67cm Dish, Broadband Satellite Modem and Welcome Kit. "

So with this I need to set up and install my own dish? Is this standard for all sat internet companies? I know with the Qiniq in Nunavut, no dish setup is required.

How do you have satellite internet without a satellite dish? Something doesn't add up there.

I was guessing you were extremely remote or something. Do you have digital cellular service where you are? I know Rogers has portable internet in major cities- just wondering if that is on the horizon for remote areas too.

NO cell phone coverage where I am. The only thing that might explain it is that this company Qiniq must have a dish in the town or something but I am not sure.

All I did was go to the setup guy, get the modem and bring it home. That was it, no wires or anything.
