Using the new Schiefele standard all these offenses should be 4 playoff games or 20 regular season games.

Scheifele was a completely different play, at least based on how they found the facts. They rejected his defence of “trying to prevent a goal” and were left with “knew he was going to score and decided to punish him severely”. So intent to injure, outside of a play and showing bad sportsmanship.

What are they supposed to do, stop trying?

Plenty of teams go prevent mode when up 5-6 goals two periods in.
Doesn't mean they stopped trying, but they also know the game is done and it isn't necessary. You see that a lot in those type of games.
It feels like racking up bad karma points and begging for that team to return the favor when you're continuing to embarrass a team alreasy up by a bunch like that this deep into playoffs.

Weber's vicious cross check to the back has no possible defense other than to attempt to injure in retaliation for a smash into the boards.
Kolesar's hit into Weber was somewhat of a hockey play. ... one that Weber vicious reputation usually protects him from taking. Weber's premediated 2nd crosscheck from behind with no hockey play within 50 feet leaves no doubt of intention and then Weber turning down the offer to a hockey fight with the smaller Kolesar was bad sportsmanship. 4 playoff games for the crosscheck and 2 for not accepting the expected challenge.

I kept thinking about the game 7 victory by the Red Wings over the Avs in round 3 of the playoffs in 2002. Final score was 7-0. Such a close series until that game, but I recall some media calling out the Red Wings for running up the score. Probably Don Cherry was one of them, that seemed to be something he liked to call out.

Especially on some of the goals.
Like Schenn takes a harmless floater from the point, and Pulock pretty much kicks it into his own net.
What is Tampa supposed to do there.
And on the 5 minute PP you can't really just stop playing there. Barzal took a stupid penalty with a dirty play, you throw your top guys out after something like that.

It's the playoffs. Good sportsmanship takes a back seat. Running up the score in a tight series like this can break a teams psyche for the remainder of the series. And it kind of worked. Guess we will see. But it's definitely not ergergious.

Lose by 1 or 10 it doesn't matter. Plus historically teams that get blown out come back strong and win the next one.

I'm betting that's simply not true in the playoffs. But really have no idea.

Which is why Tampa maybe shouldn't have done it.
But that remains to be seen.

I think the Islanders had a part to play too.
“Don’t want to lose like that? Play better.”

Running up the score might motivate the other team. But it might beat them into submission. Who knows. I suspect it will be neither. Trotz will just refocus his team.

An Islanders Habs final would be a breath of fresh air.
A Vegas Tampa final would be lame and stale.

Teams that have played 5 times and 9 times in the Finals since 1971? Fresh!

Any time you’re winning a playoff game by 5+, you may has well swap out your composite one-pieces for Sher Wood timber and prepare to defend yourself.
