I've heard nothing but good about Sharp, Samsung and Hitatchi LCDs. Two of my friends have Sharp Aquos sets. they're really nice. Great sharp and bright pictures.

I have a Sony Bravia 40" LCD and have had nothing but good to say about it. I haven't seen a TV (in that price range) to be better than the Bravia.

BUT I would say it also comes down to personal preference. Regardless of brand or model they are all mass produced so you never know about how well they will stand up...but for picture quality it would depend on what your main use of the TV is for.

Isn't it true that there are only two LCD manufactures in the world and everyone just stamps their name on it?

I agree with this post. Seems that anybody who buys one of those sets raves about it. When you get any of those in your house it'll be glorious.

I managed to grab a great deal during boxing week sales (42" Sharp 1080p for 1300$), but I noticed that a couple weeks ago the sale popped back up at future shop. Keep an eye out, the prices are always falling.

In general, how good are today's LCDs for watching hockey? The black-to-white transition time for LCD pixels was a big concern not long ago, and hockey is the extreme of that.

I think that's correct for the actual LCD screens. Everyone else builds their TVs (processors, circuits, software, casing, etc.) around them.

They are much better than about 5 years ago. I'm still a believer in light blue ice because you can pick up the texture of the ice much better, but I'll watch two teams I don't care about in LCD HD before a Edm vs Vancouver game on a stardard TV

More like:

AU Optronics
LG.Philips LCD
Samsung Electronics
Sharp Corporation

As the big four.

Personally, I wouldn't buy an LCD for watching hockey. I'd get a plasma while they are still being sold. There's no reason to get LCD given how good plasmas are these days (which are their last). Pretty soon, OLED will be better than everything else.
