If this keeps Tavares in tow thats great. Don't want him in San Jose.

I gather that, which is why I used the term 'wouldnt' instead of 'couldnt' but that doesnt seem outrageous.

Maybe it was the term? I'd pay a little extra to bring back your Cup Winning coach for the next season.

From what I have heard both parties were not serious about a return and there has been tension between MacLellan and Trotz.

Sounds like the most the Caps offered was $1.8 million per.

That seems ridiculously low for just winning the Cup.

That extension was what was already in his contract if he won the Stanley Cup.

Both sides recognized that was too low for today's market and "attempted" to negotiate more that.

The caps also had Reirden as the coach in waiting, and might have been worried that he would bolt if he had to be an assistant for 2+ years

It's a pretty backwards situation when the Islanders are willing to spend and the Caps aren't. O_O

That being said, if they can keep Tavares, Tavares/Barzal is up there with the best 1-2 punches at centre.

Hopefully the Isles keep Tavares and Trotz does some good things for that team. Always liked the Isles.

The Isles were a complete mess the last few years in their front office.

Crazy how they cleaned house in an attempt to have JT stay.

In either case this looks like a big upgrade in management in coach.
