Default Darryl Sutter announces he is done coaching in the NHL

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...-nhl-coaching/

Quote:
Should the Washington Capitals choose not to hire assistant Todd Reirden to be their coach, they needn’t call to ask about the availability of Darryl Sutter.

He’s finished as a coach.

We won’t go as far as to say he’s retired, as the 59-year-old rancher is up at the crack of dawn every morning, running his 3,000-acre farm in Viking, Ab.

But in terms of an NHL career that started in 1978 when he was drafted 178th overall, he’s happy to ride his tractor into the sunset with two Stanley Cups and a cabin full of memories.

"Forty years, that’s enough," said Sutter, 59, when asked if he’d consider the Washington gig that became vacant when Barry Trotz resigned following this month’s Stanley Cup win.

"No way, I’d be too far away from the grandkids."

That’s how it goes for coaches – they don’t retire, unless they are Scotty Bowman.

They simply fade away from the scene.

Quote:
He admitted that situation could have been found close to home had the Flames called this spring when Glen Gulutzan was replaced by Bill Peters.

"I would have listened for sure," said Sutter of a possible return to the organization he spent eight years with.

"Brad (Treliving) made a great choice in Bill, as did Todd (McLellan) in Edmonton, getting Gully to join."

He now insists following a winter of contemplation there’s no situation that could tempt him to leave his ranch to relocate once again with his wife, Wanda, and son, Chris.

So, Treliving never even spoke to Sutter. I am a little disappointed.

Oh boy. Could have had Sutter?

Peters better crush it.

Not going to lie, wish he would be standing behind the Flames bench next season.

Next stop for Darryl, the Hockey Hall of Fame - Certainly has a strong enough resume.

It would have been great to see Sutter behind the bench, but I'm real excited to see what Bill brings to the table with a decent NHL roster.

Treliving spoke to Peters and Peters alone. He has admitted as much

I want to go cry now.

But I can't, because I'm at work.

Yeah they are certainly not mutually exclusive desires. I am interested to see what Peters does as well.

Borderline criminal that Darryl only coached this team for three years.

That is definitely the approach someone should take after failing on their previous hire. I am wishing Peters the best of luck but what a close-minded search for a new coach.

I still think that the Ownership Group/KK has some bad blood with Sutter. That and its like they rather rummage through the discount bin over paying the full shelf price.

I really wonder what would have happened if Bill declined the flames coaching position. Probably gone with Huska as head coach?

I think we'd still have GG in that case.

Is Darryl more beloved in Calgary or LA? He single handedly turned the team around going on 14 years now.

Happy retirement Darryl! I was hoping he'd come to AZ when Tipp left.

Maybe he’ll still be willing to listen in 2 or 3 years if Peters turns out to be GG 2.0.

Pretty ballsy move by Treliving, I have to say. I certainly wouldn’t hitch my career to a guy with 4 years of not even sniffing the playoffs if a guy like Darryl was willing to come to the table.

If Peters turns out to be GG 2.0. - Treliving won't be GM of this team IMO.

At that point though, I'd think Sutter wouldn't field any calls if he's been out of the game for 3 years.

Darryl has never told the truth to the media in his life so no reason to believe he is permanently retired IMO.

Well, he never really said as much, did he? From what I see all he has admitted that he will not consider moving away in order to coach in the NHL.

I think it's too bad Treliving didn't approach him. However, if a guy says "I'm not really interested in coaching, but I guess I would listen to an offer to coach near where I live" I'm not sure he's still got the fire in his belly that is needed.
