TBH, it's not very hard to humiliate the Oilers in trades.

They didn't steal anything, it was a pretty fair trade. Just bad timing for the Flames to have a bad season.
Eberle for Strome, that's a steal.
Hall for Larsson, that's a steal.
Griffin for 1st + two 2nd's, another steal.

Considering how bad the Isles management has been since the mid 1990s - its pretty disgusting our post-season records are pretty much the same (with the exception of 2004) since then.

Considering that from the mid-1990s to 2004, the Flames were in survival mode, trying not to go broke until a salary cap finally came in, and that you leave out the one year in which they had their greatest playoff success since '89, I'd say your comparison is pretty disgusting in itself.

^^^ i'm sure the Flames ownership and mgmt group has a much longer list of excuses than yours ... nevertheless the comparison stands.

Lou's old school but he's a massive upgrade

You must have forgot about the five weeks that Neil Smith was GM.

You obviously have no idea of the difference between an excuse and a reason.
And no, the comparison does not stand, because you deliberately left out the Flames' best year in that stretch and included the Islanders' best. That's called cherrypicking, and it's a no-no.
So tell me, what's your excuse for crapping all over the Flames every single chance you get, and never having a single positive thing to say about them?

It was an overpayment without a doubt. Not totally one-sided like the Oilers deals but Hamonic really isn't worth what the Flames paid to acquire him as he's a 4th defenseman with no offensive upside. Not a bad player but IMO he's not much of an upgrade over Engelland.

I'd say he was the Flames third defenceman and in the top two defensively. You'd get a first back for him today if you traded him. Probably a higher first.

being a fan for 35 years with only 4 playoff series wins in the last 25 years ... that's enough for me. I"m still a fan ... but a very cynical one. Somehow this team wasted its chances with the best goaltender in the world and the number one power forward. So i don't think we are that much different from the Isles in the grand scheme of things unfortunately.

It was market value. Defensive defensemen go for that much in trades even if fans don’t want to believe it.
See Robyn Regehr as a pending UFA near the end of his career for two 2nds.
See Doug Murray as a pending UFA near the end of his career for two 2nds.
And the examples could go on and on.

Also, Hamonic is only 27 and just entering his prime. And on a good contract. Both those things increase his value significantly. I know fans are very focused on today, but he is going to be a solid part of the D for years to come.

Not to mention he seems to love Calgary. I think that is worth mentioning because I really believe that he is going to re-sign with us when his contract is due.

To me, you don't seem cynical so much as perpetually outraged. Back around the time Jay Feaster became GM, I stopped being emotionally involved in the team's on-ice success or failure and kept following it because the process of blowing up and rebuilding was an interesting soap opera.
I tell people that I follow NHL management for the fun of seeing just how badly a business can be run without being the publishing industry. I mostly mean it.
I don't know if that counts as cynicism, but I can't think of a better word offhand.
