Quote:
The National Hockey League, the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and Bloomage International jointly announced today that the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins will travel to China in September to participate in the 2018 O.R.G. NHL China Games.
On Saturday, September 15, the Calgary Flames will play host to the Boston Bruins in the first of two preseason games at Shenzhen Universiade Center in Shenzhen, and on Wednesday, September 19, the Bruins will host the Flames at Cadillac Arena in Beijing.
This announcement advances the NHL and the NHLPA's commitment to grow the game globally, while furthering the League and the Association's international strategy.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Perhaps most encouraging about this, is that the team should be set early and we won't have to watch another training camp where they don't have a "season ready" team until the last game.

Odd choice of teams. Cool nonetheless. Hopefully it means we don't dress a bunch of scrubs/PTO's like we've done in past few years, and that guys are ready to play starting in game 1.

Well crap.
The Flames already shoot themselves in the foot by starting like complete garbage and now they get to do it in China.
Fantastic.
Well....by brother in law is working in Shanghai so maybe.....

It is most likely going to be a split squad situation until the team comes back from China.
Likely most of the big name players go to China while the AHL, PTOs, unsigned draft picks, etc stay in North America.

Last season, both the Canucks and Kings went to China for the preseason. Both also had new head coaches.
Vancouver had a 6-3-2 record in October. LA had a 9-2-1 record in October.
Maybe this is a good thing.

It looks like they're going a week earlier this year, so they'll likely be back in Canada before most teams have even played their first preseason games.
One good thing is that this likely means the full NHL roster will be going to China and actually playing games together early in the preseason instead of not getting the full roster in a game together until the first game of the regular season.

Could be a good team bonding exercise, especially to get guys like Tavares aligned with their new teammates.

This made me laugh harder than I'd like to admit to.

If anything, from a purely financial standpoint, as a STH I selfishly hope this kills a home pre-season game.
Vancouver only ended up with three last season, so I guess there's hope...

Makes some sense. The Flames haven't done an international trip since 1998. The Bruins haven't since 2010.

And the annoying thing is you know the Flames will still make sure they get the four home games at the Saddledome in.

Load his suitcase with counterfeit merchandise, then "tip off" the RCMP.

Pretty cool. Glad it’s preseason and not regular season.
