It's not the same as a player who can be traded, and not wanting to lose an asset. It's a safety net for the coach term.

No you’re right, you wouldn’t want him there. I’m just stating how I believe (I may be wrong) his contract in Washington worked.

He made 1.5/year and he had a clause that if he won the cup he could automatically get a contract extension worth 1.8/year no questions asked.

He won the cup. Declined the 1.8 and wanted more. They said no, so now he’s in NY
