[OOT] You’ve Purchased the Calgary Flames, What would you change?

Hypothetically, let’s imagine you won the lottery and bought the Calgary Flames. You’re now the sole owner. You’ve decided to keep Brad Treliving and Geoff Ward on payroll, so they’ll manage the roster. You won’t be making any roster changes at this time.

Your job is to run the franchise and enhance the Calgary Flames brand.

What changes are you making to the Calgary Flames?

Here’s my changes, listed by importance:

1) Retro and Heritage Classic Jerseys Full-Time immediately! Burn the current Home and Away Jerseys with their hideous patches and striping and never wear them again.

2) Retire #34 and #14 next season. Kiprusoff and Fleury deserve to be honoured. This is long overdue. Us lifelong fans idolized these players growing up. These players are cornerstones in Flames history.

3) Ditch Sportsnet as our broadcast partner as soon as possible. Move to TSN or an independent provider. Keep Ball and Hrudey, but make sure the broadcast is in 4k and the sound matches with the gameplay. Sportsnet is the worst!!

4) For the New Arena, build a concept that pays tribute to the Saddledome. Perhaps have some sort of modern saddle on the exterior of the arena. Sell the naming rights for the new arena, but have “Saddledome” still in the name. Also have 10x the number of bathrooms than we have now.

5) Change our goal song back to “Burn Baby Burn” or “Shot Down in Flames.”

6) Turn up the volume of the music at the Dome. I find the music is too quiet. Let’s get our fans hyped up!

7) Remove those stupid vehicles from the concourse. They take up way too much space.

8) Allow Flames players to continue to have the option to wear or not to wear helmets in warmups. It’s their choice. It reminds me of old time hockey.

9) Murals for the New Saddledome: Ed Whalen, Peter Maher, Beasley, Ken King, etc.

10) Have 6 bobblehead nights per season honouring current and former players.

Awesome thread idea!

1) Retro home/away as the main jerseys. Two alts: Blasty and pedestal reds.

2) Retire 34, retire 14, retire 2 and 25. Add memorials in the concourse for Steve Montador, Ken King, Mickey Renaud, George Pelawa to go along with the Sarge and Bob Johnson ones (Bob Johnson has one, right?)

3) I would definitely meddle in hockey ops but not too much, I'm not smart enough for that sort of stuff...

4) Give Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff (and myself) penthouse suites with glass floors on the top of the arena where they can watch every game with a birds-eye view.

It is utterly criminal that the Saddledome doesn't have the best sound in the NHL. It's especially bad when you consider that a local company called PK Sound makes some of the best loudspeakers on the planet.

They do the sound for several stages at Electric Daisy Carnival for crying out loud. Get this stuff in the Dome!!!

11) Oh and before the Saddledome’s demolished, allow season ticket holders to go to the arena and take their seats home with them. I’ve always wanted a pair of Saddledome seats in my basement.

The intro music prior to the anthems is way too loud though. And then Beasley has to yell over it for the starting lineup. The combination literally makes my ears hurt.

A friend of mine bought 3 seats out of the gardens in Toronto about 25 years ago for $250.00. He says he can get at least $700.00 each now.

Spend money properly. The team is without a real head coach, I'd give the green light to hire a top tier coach who is available. Either stop meddling with what the GM should be doing (if that's the case). At this point of where the Flames are, I would either tell them to stockpile young players and picks so that the team becomes better when the new arena opens. Unless you can find a way to improve this team incredibly right now.

I've never been to a live game in Calgary so I can't speak much about the fan experience but watching the games on TV is depressing. Find a way to liven up the crowd and have the fans louder than the music.

Better branding, the Flames are stuck in the 90's in terms of marketing this team.

Bring back 04 uniforms with the Retros as the 3rd/4th Jersey.

Its insane the Flames don't carry every singe roster player's uniform in the Fanattic in Retro.

Make the away net corner section a designated section for a soccer style ultra supporters group. Sell them as a block to this group, and it will organically encourage standings, chanting/singing and flag waving all game long.

The Dome lacks atmosphere. It needs designated fans to bring the noise.
