Default What's your irrational fear?

I did a search and any fear threads are about 10 years old. So something different from the virus threads.

I'm curious about the irrational fears people may have.

Nothing like fear of flying or heights, but perhaps you really believe walking under a ladder will give you bad luck, or you're scared of ducks.

Or one like mine.

I have a fear of metronomes.

I think it comes from a childhood nightmare, but that swinging bar and ticking actually freaks me out.

I'm afraid of Canada geese while I'm wearing dress pants but not when wearing jeans. Because if one decided to bite me in the testicle it would be a lot more damaging if I'm wearing dress pants. Denim is thicker and thus provides more protection.

Shower heads.

I sometimes have dreams of shower head malfunctioning like turning off when it shouldn't, spraying something other than water, the middle of the head opening to show a deep black endless hole...#### gets weird.

The air sprayer nozzle hooked up to compressed air. I worry I'll grab it, shove it in my ear and hit the trigger.

That one day I'll listen to that voice in my head that occasionally says "swerve off the road" when I drive.

Robots with guns. Which is actually a rational fear, because the technology basically already exists.

I also never stop next to the wheel of a big truck at a red light, or drive beside one in that spot, because I'm afraid of being killed in a split rim tire explosion.

I don't know if that's technically irrational or just really, really unlikely.

not at a red light, but I do know someone whose car was hit by an exploding truck tire on the 401 near Toronto.

I have a similar thing with the seeds from avocados. Whenever I pick one up I have a fear that I'll put it into my mouth and it will get stuck in my throat.

I nearly lost my leg to a pressure washer incident.

Spoiler!

I used to know someone who told me that they don't have a fear of heights, they have a fear that they will jump. I get that.

The long hooks on displays in stores. I’m positive I’m going to not pay attention and send one straight through my goddamn eye.

Flying. Started a thread a few years ago.

Finally talked to my doctor and got prescribed Ativan which has done the trick for the last couple flights.

Industrial accidents scare me. I work for a company that does a lot of contacting for large industries and some of the accidents I hear about still freak me out.

I used to do some work at Alcan in Kitimat and during a health and safety meeting we were told about a contractor who sustained a fatal injury from an industrial pressure washer. The hose slipped out of his hand and started whipping around. He tried to catch it and was impaled.

I also heard of one in the U.S. where a guy thought he would be funny and pressed the side of his head up to the suction end of a hydrovac truck and it sucked his brain out though his ear.

And at one of the paper mills I was at, they told us about a guy that caught on fire and jumped into what he thought was a ditch full of water, but it ended up being some kind of fuel. Apparently the guy survived and is badly disfigured, but he goes around teaching health and safety lessons.

At the same mill, someone was on the roof taking videos for some reason and walked right off the ledge to his death.

And when I lived in Thunder Bay, a couple of girls climbed up a grain elevator and fell down a shoot. Apparently the shoots start off wide but get really narrow near the bottom. It freaks me out just thinking about it.

And trains, don't even get me started about trains.

Whenever I eat tomato, I have to cut it in fear of if I bit into it a fruit worm will come out.
