Default 70th Anniversary of the Korean War

Often a forgotten conflict, but the fighting was often extremely violent.

One of the best war movies I've seen, Tae Guk Gi, about the Korean War. I'm not sure where you find it at this point, but the premise is two brothers who are separated and end up on different sides of the war, being used as an allegory.

Totally OT, but I can't read "allegory" without my mind going here:

Spoiler!

When I think of brutal war, my mind always pictures the European battlefields of WWI and II.

But what SE Asia has gone through during the 19th and 20th centuries was almost constant war and oppression, and it didn't stop after the brutality of Japanese invasion and occupation either. The Korean war of the 50s and the Vietnam war prolonged the suffering of those long suffering peoples. The violence unimaginable.

There's a great 2019 Korean war movie called Roar to Victory that shows the unbreakable spirit of the Koreans before WWII. Very cool film.

Yeah, I think Thailand is the only country in Asia that's never been invaded and occupied by the West. Plenty of horrible stories and history all over Asia that's revealed if you visit those countries.

In Vietnam the war was known for the sweltering heat and jungles that could hide your enemy, as well as deadly disease.

Korea became well known for its man killing winters.

The Korean War will always be remember for a throw of the dice amphibious Marine Invasion that turned near defeat to certain victory for the UN Forces.

The sacking of McArthur.

The intervention of the Chinese "Volunteers"

The Christmas Miracle evacuation.

Good call.

I think its important for Canadians to look at the Major battles that Canada was involved in.

Operation Killer

Battle of Kapyong

Tommy Prince one of Canada's greatest Soldiers returns to the Korean War

The Princess Pats received a Presidential Unit Citation for their actions in Kapyong.

Asians were invading and conquering one anther long before Europeans came on the scene. Vietnam and Korea, for instance, have both been invaded and occupied by China multiple times.

The Korean War was brutal, and featured several incredibly dramatic reversals of fortune. There's not much public awareness these days that American and Chinese troops have fought pitched battles on a huge scale within living memory. The Forgotten War by Max Hastings is an excellent treatment.
