Dammit. I knew they'd introduce that to the free riders eventually.
I've been on YTP for a few years, defs wasn't a feature at the time outside of a subscription.

Ad-blocking, background playback, video downloading, picture-in-picture, disable suggestions and shorts, dark mode, sponsor block (not just ads but segments of videos where they cut away to promote something), etc.
The app is so good.

I looked at the benefits of YouTube Premium and the only one I'd make any use of is ad-free viewing and I can't justify spending more than I pay for Disney+ and Amazon Prime just for no ads.
If they offered just an ad-free tier with none of the other things for about $5/month, I'd consider it. I hate it when companies bundle a bunch of stuff together just to justify a higher price.

It's like the Netflix "no account sharing" BS earlier this year: it didn't push me to get my own Netflix account, it just pushed me to not watch Netflix content at all. Same thing is going to happen with Disney+ next month; same will happen to all of them if they keep going down this road.

Pretty sure people are saying its happening on Firefox as well.
Seems very intermittent.

Giving up Netflix or any other streaming service is pretty easy in comparison to giving up YouTube. YouTube just has so much useful content especially for some of my business needs. There are some business solutions content creators that I couldn't live without.

Yeah, you are really sticking it to them by not watching their content for free/without ads!

My overarching point is there's a happy medium—an acceptable quantity and frequency of advertisements that I as a viewer will tolerate—and Google are pushing past that level and doubling-down on making you watch it or coughing up a monthly fee to make it tolerable. It's just the (seemingly inevitable) en####tification of the platform. Instead of making a modest revenue from my modest ad-viewing they'll get nothing from me at all, until eventually they make it impossible for me to view the site. That modest ad revenue from my watching is now gone, forever.
I would be remiss if I didn't point out that (mostly) it is not 'Youtube' content anyway: it's content created by others. In exchange the content creators get whatever modest ad revenue-sharing they might from Google, or nothing at all. Therein lies the most ridiculous part of Google having the temerity to extort viewers for a subscription fee or else fill the platform with obstructive advertising and make the viewing experience intolerably annoying: it's not Google's content in the first place.

But it's not like I've been paying for a premium family plan in Lira for the last year or anything....

VPN or not is a solid deal for a family when you use it for music too

I've had YouTube premium for years. I use YouTube music though and even if it's not as good as Spotify it does the trick for me and having YouTube/music for the whole family for 20$/mo is pretty good value imo.
I listen to music on their platform probably 5-6 hours a day between home and would bet I watch a few hours of YouTube a week. Compared to a couple hours of Netflix or Disney every week I think it's worth it.

Running Firefox X ublock for years and until the last month and did not have any issues. Found that clearing the cache and updating worked for several weeks; Settings>filter lists>purge then update worked, until it did not. Then discovered that baiting the ad by turning ublock off then waiting for the ad then turning it back off worked and did not get any disturbances for the last ten days.

Maybe it’s me but it seems the ads are out of control now. 2 x 14 second videos nearly every time you start a video followed by another ad within a few minutes. I find myself just backing out and skipping some videos because it’s not worth sitting through another 28 seconds of ads.

The amount of ads are controlled by the channel, not youtube itself. But maybe Youtube has changed the default to be higher and some channels aren't changing it/haven't noticed

I got a 2 minute ad on Twitch the other day. Seeing a 2 minute ad when I turn on a stream is a pretty good motivator to go a different website.

Easily my most useful subscription. I've rarely felt money was better spent.
So yeah I audibly groan when I see people waiting through ads and suffering. They just don't understand what it's like on the other side. Total bliss and freedom. Just f-n do it.

I groan just as much when I see YT fanboys gushing about paying for the subscription, like it's the greatest thing ever. I now wait for the day people start gushing about NHL centre ice or pornhub premium. Finding workarounds is nothing new and has existed since the day the internet was created. For some reason it's a real point of contention with the YT community when they find out youtubers are looking for way around paying. Youtube doesn't even have to promote it. Subscription payers are doing all the pushback and promoting for them. YT sits back and laughs while racking in the dough as the general public pushes for everyone to get premium.
It might come to a point where I use my VPN and get a cheap YT overseas account one day, but that will be when I've exhausted all other methods. Many of us are simply sick of ads inundating us at every turn in life and know the ramifications of paying to remove ads and what road that leads us down. Sounds like Netflix is already offering that package. Only a matter of time before the executive team at Sportsnet take notice and have us paying to remove intrusive ads during hockey games. Will SN subscribers start complaining if we find away around that? Stay tuned...
