So no matter what metric you look at this movie fits into the most popular movies discussion despite the poor release date.
One thing to remember about releases of older movies is that there were a lot less people living in North America 50 years ago.

The craziest thing about that is that "Gone with the Wind" is still the highest grossing domestic movie of all time at 1.8 billion inflation adjusted. At that time there were only 130 million people in the USA. Almost everyone in North America must have seen that movie.

The Gone With the Wind gross also needs context. The movie was in theatres for like 4 years, and the only way (at the time) you were ever going to see it was in theatres. There was also limited entertainment options, and far less competition in the movie business.

It would be like if Force Awakens was still in theatres, there was no other way to watch it, and no other blockbuster movies had been released since. It would be rolling in billions of domestic gross too.

Killmonger was brilliant. One of the most three-dimensional villains in any movie I've seen in recent years.

It was cool to see Wakanda, what a culture in Africa might have looked like had there been no colonial influences (and y'know, if an asteroid made of vibranium gave them a huge advantage thousands of years ago . . . )

But aside from that, it was just another Marvel movie: not Winter Soldier-good, but not Iron Man 2 or 3-bad.

Black Panther is also not doing particularly well internationally (in comparison to its domestic take). BP is 81st internationally. While trash like the new Jumanji is 45th.
Before release I never throught I was say this, but the new Jumanji is far from being "trash". It's not amazing or anything, but it's actually a pretty decent movie for what it is.

I tried to go see it again tonight but every showing at landmark country hills was sold out or only has singles/front row left. And it isn’t like it’s been cut back to a single theatre either.

Went tonight.

Thought it was ok. Fight scenes were pretty cool. Thought the story was pretty weak though. Could tell what was going to happen pretty easily. And I thought the whole ‘villian’ was pretty hokey. But enjoyable none the less.

Also reminded how terrible 3-D is. Made the mistake of going to it in 3D.

I went today and it was pretty good. Nothing amazing but definitely above average and entertaining. The story was basic but solid and benefited from not being an origin story. I also liked how it covered some interesting themes that we haven't seen in the MCU. The villain was great but I wish they spent more time on him and we got to see more of him as the Black Panther. Other than Sister Q, who was a fun character, the attempts at humour fell flat and I had hoped for a darker movie considering the potential of the story. I also found the ending to be rushed and was disappointed in the final battle and fight scenes.

Overall it was a typical Marvel film that I enjoyed. I'm not sure it will be that memorable though other than being the one before Infinity War. 6/10. I took a point off because of the Gollum Bilbo reunion scene which reminded me of those crappy Hobbit movies.

For whatever reason the movie is falling off every other day but remaining really strong on Saturday.

i went and saw it with a buddy this past week - i enjoyed it.

i've never been into comics so i went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about the character/story and everything seemed to 'make sense' to me.

the locations they filmed in were amazing.

i'm curious about one scene/location - i think there was a deep canyon with waterfalls on either side of the canyon - is that a real location or was it cgi? i just remember going 'wow! that's awesome!'

I have to admit I was slightly disappointed by Black Panther. It had a lot going for it, but there were a few problems that left me kind of cold.

- The Black Panther himself was boooriiing. Chadwick Boseman had no charisma and I didn't care about the character at all. In these Marvel style movies where everything revolves around the main hero this is a major problem and I think the biggest single thing that failed to lift the movie from "okay" to "good". I was honestly a bit surprised by how little I liked Black Panther here, as I liked the character and the actor much more before this. I guess it shows how some actors, while good in small roles, can't really carry a movie.

- In general most of the characters weren't much, even though acting saved some of them. I don't know if they were trying too hard to create empowering characters, but I've rarely seen a movie with less character flaws on display.

- This is probably mostly a problem for someone with a background in anthropological studies, but Wakanda was at times quite cringeworthy Afrokitsch. Could have been much worse admittedly, but I did hope for something a bit better.

- I get how this helped simplify the plot, but Wakanda being simultaneously a sort of a dream society and a patriarchal absolute monarchy was just weird, especially since this movie so badly wanted to reflect on real world issues. I really felt they should have addressed that dissonance somehow. Although I suspect the filmmakers realized there was no way to make that okay and still keep Wakanda as the dream society they wanted it to be, so they just went with it. It is I think more than a little awkward considering the undertone of "this is the best Africa can be" of Wakanda.

After all that criticism, it's still a solid B+ movie, plus nice that it got made and all that. Killmonger was easily the bright spot of the movie. The character wasn't bad in itself, but Michael B. Jordan was just excellent.

I also think this was probably a very difficult movie to make, considering all the scrutiny and criticism it was going to be under.

Just got back from seeing it here in Shanghai with a sold-out theatre. I suspect it'll do pretty well here.

Spoiler!

Anyways, I enjoyed the movie. Thought the acting overall was really good, though I agree the lead is a bit dry. Really liked the sister character. Hope she returns in future movies. The villains were both very good too. Main villain was strong and the guy who played Golem in LOTR was a great character.

Not my favourite of all Marvel movies, but definitely worth the watch. Whoever did the sound for the movie did a great job too.

I just saw it in China too. Sometimes I wonder if parts have been edited out because there was very little action in this movie. The car scene near the beginning was good but other than that...Meh.

I liked the guy who.played the leader of the mountain people. He was funny and likeable. Lead character was boring.

Logan and the original Xmen movies are.the only superhero movies I've ever liked.

Everytime I go see a superhero movie I promise I'm done with them but I always fall for the hype.

I find it strange how Marvel.movies get great reviews and DC get garbage reviews. Both of.them are pretty mediocre most of.the time. Disney just knows who to.pay is.my guess.

I finally saw Black Panther this weekend with my wife. I'm not a big fan of superhero movies but I go see these movies because my wife loves them and also because she endures lots of artsy and foreign movies for me. I tend to dislike superhero movies because I find the characters too one-dimensional, the dialogue too artificial or expository, and these movies are unable to generate any genuine concern about the fate of the main characters. I would say this was pretty much all true of Black Panther. I also didn't really like how the kinetic energy blasts from his suit was treated as a deus ex machina plot device. However, I still enjoyed the movie mostly because I was really impressed with Ryan Coogler's direction. That casino fight scene was a particular standout for me with the frenetic combination of stunts and fight choreography and CGI and the camera swooping between the two levels of the casino. It was shot so cleanly with a limited number of cuts -- usually, a scene like that would be presented as a blurry jumble of edits. Pretty awesome scene to experience on the big screen.

I totally agree, the Jumanji reboot was one of the most amusing movies I've seen in a long time.

I was also very surprised at how much I enjoyed the new Baywatch, so maybe I just approve of Dwayne Johnson-led reboots.

Agreed on Jumanji. My 11 year old daughter really wanted to see it so I brought her on opening weekend. Pleasant surprise that it was amusing and entertaining.

Just like a wrinkle in time last week, tomb raider is unlikely to top black panther this weekend.

Last movie to be number 1 for 5 straight weeks was Avatar. Fourth highest fifth weekend gross of all time and only the seventh movie of all time to hit $600 million domestically.

For the fifth weekend in a row, Disney and Marvel's Black Panther is the weekend's number one film at the domestic box office, becoming the first film to accomplish that feat since Avatar in 2009. The film is also only the seventh film to ever gross over $600 million at the domestic box office as it continues to dominate, now less than $18 million shy of topping The Avengers and becoming the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time.

With an estimated $27 million, Black Panther finished atop the weekend box office for the fifth straight weekend, pushing the film over $605 million domestically. As a result, Black Panther joins Avatar and The Sixth Sense as only the third film to top the weekend box office for five straight weekends in the last 19 years.

Alongside its domestic achievements, Black Panther added an estimated $30 million internationally this weekend, pushing its overseas cume to $577.1 million for a global tally topping $1.183 billion, passing Captain America: Civil War ($1.153B) and Minions ($1.159B) to become the fourteenth largest worldwide release of all-time

You may note I have not judged this movie myself here. I determined that this movie was not really made for me (a fanboy since the 70s). I'm very happy how well the movie is doing - but the glowing reviews did not match my experience. I think this has to do with me being familiar with all of the mythology already. I share many of the criticisms made of the move here - others criticisms didn't bother me, because they were being true to the source material - ex. T'Challa is "boring". In the books he is far more likely to beat opponents with his brains than his fists. He is a cool, calculating, regal man.

I have hopes that the sequel can go further in quality, now that his world has been established.

Will easily become highest grossing coming book movie and highest grossing internationally solo comic book movie and probably 3rd all time inflation adjusted domestic comic book movie.

An interesting question will be is this the biggest movie of this year or will Star Wars or Infintiy War beat it. I don't think Solo will given the early press on it. Infinity War will beat it internationally. I don't think it will domestically as I can't see how Infinity war is going to be a good repeatable movie the only interesting piece is who dies and what Macguffin they use to beat Thanos.
