My neighbor was throwing out his grill, so I asked for it, put a new burner in it, and I've had it for almost a decade now. So I agree, spending $1200 on a grill is insanity to me.
But here's the thing about passing judgment on someone spending more than you would on something. It's tough not to look like a giant db when you just spent the last year broadcasting your spending obscene amounts of money on luxuries that you didn't need.

Disagree. They have some sales that makes their mediocre tools a pretty good value.

I mean, if that's really what's out there I'm "broadcasting" spending obscene money, I do regret that's the vibe that's out there. People who know me know me as frugal and as someone who tries to get deals. With a new home comes some expenses and some fun things like buying a new TV, new thermostat etc, but these are the exception for me.

They have stuff that may be good "for the price", but in general everything in there is fairly low quality chinese-made stuff that you can't expect to last. Like with anything, these days if you want to buy something of quality that will last, you have to go to a specialty store.
Oh and since we're all broadcasting our luxuries, I bought a $900 Canadian-made Napoleon BBQ last year with a great infrared side burner. So far so good.

I bought a $300 4 burner stainless steel BBQ on clearance from Walmart 16 years ago, and have replaced the burners once and the grills twice.
It was kind of a wired enigma though, I think it was regular $500(so maybe $650 with inflation?) and was really solidly built with cast iron grates and burners. I assembled many many garbage grills for them and Zellers, and this one was not at all like them, so it was a nice score. The side burner is still pristine.

Bite your tongue. My Coleman Evolution small spaces BBQ kicks ass. The heat spreaders are perfectly spaced to bridge them with a box filled with some damp smoker chips.
Did a ribeye and ahi tuna for the wife last night with mesquite wood and it was brilliant.

Sounds like a pretty good score. Every once in a while you can find stuff like that, but I find it's pretty few and far between now that even the good brands are going overseas.

I'm sure they have one or two BBQs that don't suck. The problem is the rest do.

Are the new Weber Genesis 3 burners any good? Or are the new China made Webers inferior to a comparable Napoleon or Broil King (which are less expensive).
Upgrading from a decade old cheap Broil King which has served me well.

In the past month I've seen people giving away for free old Weber Summit and Vermont Castings 4 & 6 burner units that with a bit of times, sweat, and money would keep going for another 10 years. These are units with $3,000 MSRP's - yes they are a little dirty and need some parts replaced.
When you buy from a quality manufacturer BBQ's aren't a throwaway item.
