Icon27 Stars sign Lindell to contract extension (6 yrs, $5.8mil AAV)

https://www.nhl.com/stars/news/dalla...on/c-307421984

Quote:
FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the team has signed defenseman Esa Lindell to a six-year contract extension, which will run through the 2024-25 season. The six-year contract is worth $34,800,000 and has an average annual value (AAV) of $5,800,000.

Lindell, 24, recorded 32 points (11-21=32) in 82 regular-season games played for Dallas in 2018-19. On the season amongst team leaders, he finished first in blocked shots (161), second in time on ice per game (24:20), third in hits (143), tied for fifth in assists (21), and sixth in both goals (11) and points (32), setting career-highs in each category. His +14 plus/minus rating also finished tied for third on the team. His 11 goals on the season, along with Miro Heiskanen's 12 and John Klingberg's 10, marked the first time in franchise history that three defenseman scored 10-plus goals in a single season.

Does that include (theatrical) performance bonuses?

Lindholm is the same age and makes $1 million less per year. Thank you Brad.
Weird comparison. I would think Hanifin makes more sense? He is a 30pt D making 4.95

Did the NHL fine him for diving? If not how can they ever fine anyone again?

He's 24, doesn't push play offensively... gets about 20 even strength points per year.

It's a lot of money for an Adam Larsson type.

I think there are rules about fining for diving and there have to be more than one incidents.

Michael Bay is rumored to be eating $2,000,000 of this contract annually so long as Lindell fulfills his promise to star in all movies moving forward.

Terrible contract, this guy isn't a home run.

Lindell is getting underrated here, he is very good.

But for 5.8 I think they should have got 8 years.

The best Flames comparable for the contract situation is when Brodie was signed to his extension a few years ago. 3rd contract for both, coming off a bridge after ELC.
That being said, Brodie had more NHL time, proven himself in a bigger role (stepped up big time with injuries), and signed for what works out after cap inflation to be about 500K per year less.

This is an overpay by close to 1M a year IMO. Not saying Lindell is not a good player, but if he is making 5.8M, that on most teams that is #2, potentially #1 D.
I guess the Stars can afford this while Klinberg is on a steal of a deal

What other 20 point even strength defensemen get paid anywhere near $5.8M?

he's playing over 24 minutes per game, including over 3 minutes on the PK. Points are not everything, he's a defenseman.

Agreed. And thats not my point.

Defensive dmen have a somewhat limited impact on the game and have a cap on the value they can provide.

Although he is a solid player, it strikes me as a bit rich for the ways a player of his ilk can effect a game.

He's not an Adam Larsson though. Comparison is just way off. The puck is kryptonite to a guy like Larsson and that certainly isn't the case with Lindell.

Great value for a kid coming into his prime who plays in all situations and does it well. He should really start to blossom as he gets more opportunities on the offensive side of the coin. Thus far he's only scratching the surface.

agreed, but he's a 11 goal and 32 points defenseman. Calling him a "defensive dman" is a huge stretch ... especially when Klingberg is eating most of the PP minutes.

Yeah, if anything Lindell is a young, blossoming two way defenseman. He is nothing like Larsson.

Lindell, Klingberg, Hesikanen is looking pretty good.
