Don Waddell is having a good first year in Carolina.

Given that condition, I'm assuming that Fox has already agreed to sign with the Rangers

I don't think he was going to sign anywhere other than NY or at least that neck of the woods.

A good return IMO.
Imagine we had included Kylington in the trade instead of Fox...would be nice to have a couple 2nd rounders in the chamber.

We got 2 x 2nds and Horak for Erixon right?
This is not a great return in comparision.

I'd rather have Kylington than a 2nd and conditional 3rd.

I think sometimes people overvalue draft picks. Kylington is already a bona fide NHL defenceman at 21 years old. What are the chances of drafting one of those in the 2nd or 3rd round? I mean actual chances relative to all the picks ever made in the 2nd and 3rd round.

Canes GM Don Waddell and owner Tom Dundon had multiple conversations with Adam Fox trying to change his mind but obviously could not. Given that they only had 1 team to deal with trade-wise based on Fox’s desire to sign with the Rangers, I would say the ‘Canes got a decent return

Not only that but Kylington is a mobile, puck-moving defenseman, which is the way the game is trending.

so... BT was right that Fox wasn't going to sign with Calgary...
not a fan of him, doing it, but its within he rights in the CBA that he has more and more leverage the longer you don't sign...
it is important to note, any player, who doesn't sign for 4 years has UFA status available to them so long as they want to sit unsigned for 4 years.

Exactly. This was always about asset management.
Three years of Dougie Hamilton + Dougie Hamilton return when he doesn't sign + 1 year of Micheal Ferland + no return for Ferland + 2nd and possible 2nd
For two players taken 5th overall contributing to the core and locked down for six years on favorable contracts.
I say when Hamilton doesn't sign as they don't appear to be all that strong at retaining players (fighting the contract comparables).
I think the Canes did well with Fox as a return, but they are a year closer to coming out and he put up another solid season.

But Erixon was a 1st round draft pick, not saying he was better, but draft position could have an impact.

Unfortunately those players drafted haven't really worked out.
Tyler Wotherspoon - released by Flames, signed with St. Louis Blues, played year in AHL
Markus Granlund - traded to Canucks for Hunter Shinkaruk who was traded to Montreal for Kerby Rychel
